Betting On Seattle Mariners Online

To say it’s been a struggle for the Seattle Mariners is putting it lightly. The team, which joined the American League as an expansion franchise in 1977, didn’t enjoy a winning campaign until 1991 and they’ve finished with more losses than wins in 27 of their first 39 seasons. The Mariners are one of eight teams in Major League Baseball that have never won a World Series and along with the Washington Nationals, are the only to big league ballclubs that in fact have never appeared in the World Series. The Mariners won their first American League West Division title in 1995 and captured their first playoff series victory that season over the New York Yankees. In 2001 the Mariners won an American League-record 116 games, tying the 1906 Chicago Cubs for the most single-season wins in Major League Baseball history.

The Mariners weren’t Seattle’s first foray into Major League Baseball. Seattle’s pilot project was cancelled after just one season. The Seattle Pilots were an American League expansion franchise that entered the league in 1969, finishing 64-98 and last in the six-team division.

Seattle’s Sick’s Stadium was living up to its name, simply not up to snuff as a big league ballpark and on April 1, 1970, the Pilots declared bankruptcy, paving the relocation of the team to Milwaukee, where they became the Brewers.

The state of Washington sued the American League for breach of contract and the Mariners would bring baseball back to Seattle in 1977, also as an American League expansion team.

Seattle Mariners History

Though the Seattle Mariners have suited up many great players, from Cy Young Award winning pitchers such as Randy Johnson and Felix Hernandez, to Ichiro Suzuki, perhaps the most consistent contact hitter in baseball and the man who knocked a record 262 hits in 2004, part of a record-run of nine consecutive 200-hit seasons, unquestionably, there is only one man who can be proclaimed Mr. Mariner and that is Ken Griffey Jr.

Elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2016, Griffey was the American League MVP in 1997. Four times Griffey led the league in home runs, 13 times he was an all-star and he won 10 Gold Gloves.

A generational player, generational players from other sports of his era looked up to and sought out Griffey.
