Playing in the MLB NL Central Division from their PNC Park home are the Pittsburgh Pirates. Known as The Bucs or The Buccos, a name derived from buccaneer, a synonym for pirate, the Pirates have won nine National League pennants, and the World Series on five occasions, but have not enjoyed the sweet taste of glory since 1979. Fans of the Pirates have endured many ups and down since the team’s creation in 1887 including winning the 1960 World Series against the New York Yankees by a game winning walk-off home run.
To this day it’s the only time that Game 7 of the World Series has ended by a home run.
On the flip side, the Pirates suffered 20 consecutive losing seasons from 1993 through to 2012, the longest ever streak by a professional North American sports team, including a horrific 57-105 season in 2010.
More recently, Pittsburgh Pirates have shown they are one of the best-run MLB teams. They reached three consecutive playoffs, winning 98, 88, and 94 games during those seasons, meaning only the Cardinals and Dodgers have won as many games, and they have done so on a much smaller budget that teams in a similar position.
In Andrew McCutchen, the Pirates have a legitimate superstar, while the likes of Gerrit Cole, Gregory Polanco, and Starling Marte, they have some great baseball players. However, the losses of Neil Walker and Pedro Alvarez, who accounted for 43 of Pittsburgh’s home runs last season (31% of their total), could hit the Pirates hard.

Will the Bucs’ Lack of Depth Haunt Them?
The Pirates have a great baseball team, shown by their record in recent seasons, but they do lack depth in every position, something that could come back to haunt them if they have a flurry of injuries during the regular season.
There is a lot of pressure on new acquisitions John Jaso and David Freese to fill the boots of departures Neil Walker and Pedro Alvarez, but it remains to be seen if they can boost the Pirates’ lineup, which does seem to lack power.
