Betting On National League East Online

A mix of new and old, the National League East Division features some of the more well-known teams in the league and some traditional baseball franchises. The division has tended to be dominated by different teams since it was reformed in 1994 as part of baseball’s new six-division alignment. The original power was the Atlanta Braves, who won 11 consecutive National League East titles between 1995-2005, appearing in three World Series over that span. The mantle was then passed to the Philadelphia Phillies. [+]

The Phillies were winners of five straight National League East crowns from 2007-11.

Lately, the New York Mets and Washington Nationals have emerged as the National League East powers, and the Mets represented the National League in the 2015 World Series, the first National Leage East team to do so since the Phillies in 2008.

There are two distinct geographic rivalries evident within the National League East. The Washington Nationals, Philadelphia Phillies and New York Mets form a natural triangle along the East Coast, and these three cities tend to be heated rivals in every major North American sport.

Further south, the Miami Marlins and Atlanta Braves are also natural rivals. In fact, the Braves demanded to be placed in the National League East in 1994 in order to ramp up their battle with the Marlins, taking advantage of their close proximity to each other.

National League East History

In a curious quirk of baseball history, the first-ever National League Championship Series was contested between two current National League East Division teams when the New York Mets defeated the Atlanta Braves en route to a win in the 1969 World Series. When Major League Baseball first adopted division play that season, the Braves were actually placed in the National League West.

Born as the Boston Red Stockings in 1876, and then going through life as the Boston and Milwaukee Braves before relocating to Atlanta in 1966, the Atlanta Braves were an original National League franchise.

The Braves were the last Major League team of legendary slugger Babe Ruth and the team that Hank Aaron was playing for when he broke Ruth’s big league mark of 714 home runs in 1974.

The Philadelphia Phillies first joined the National League in 1883, making them also one of baseball oldest and most traditional franchises, but the rest of the National League East is youthful by comparison.

The Mets entered as an expansion team in 1962, while the Washington Nationals were also an expansion club born in the 1960s, joining the National League as the Montreal Expos in 1969, at the time Major League Baseball’s first Canadian club. The Miami Marlins also came aboard as an expansion team in 1993, then known as the Florida Marlins.

Lately, World Series wins have proven hard to come by for National League East teams. They’ve been shutout of Fall Classic titles since the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Tampa Bay Rays in 2008. The Atlanta Braves last World Series victory came at the expense of the Cleveland Indians in 1995, while you have to go all the way back to 1986 to find the Mets winning the World Series over the Boston Red Sox.

As the Florida Marlins, the current Miami Marlins won World Series titles in 1997 and 2003, both as a playoff wildcard team. The Marlins are the only National League East team that’s never won a division title. And the fifth member of this group, the Nationals, is still searching for their first World Series appearance.
