Real Salt Lake compete in the Western Conference and played their first season in 2005. They started poorly and did not manage a playoff berth in their first three seasons. The team made some major changes in 2008. They moved into their new stadium, The Rio Tinto, were playing under a new general manager and added a number of key players to bolster their roster. They managed to make the Tinto a fortress, turning Real Salt Lake into a formidable force at home. Real qualified for the playoffs for the first time but their season ended in heartbreak when they lost to the Red Bulls in the Western Conference finals.
The 2009 season Real’s real breakout year. They enjoyed an almost perfect record at the Rio Tinto and managed a fantastic goal difference to boot. However, struggling on the road left them in a battle for the last playoff spot late in the season. Real clinched the last spot with a win in the final game of the regular season. Real went on to defeat a star-studded LA Galaxy in the MLS cup final in dramatic fashion beating LA 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 tie in regular time. In doing so, they qualified for the CONCACAF champions league for the first time.
Real were dumped out of the playoffs in the first round in the followin season after another fantastic showing at home in the regular season. Their first outing in the CONCACAF champions league was tempered success. They made the finals but could not defeat C.F. Monterrey over 2 legs.
In 2013 new ownership and management came on board and Real traded some of their key players. They have yet to recover and emulate the same success as earlier years. After finishing second in the West in 2013 and third in 2014, Salt Lake slumped to ninth place in 2015 and recovered to sixth place last season. Will the recovery continue in 2017?
