Redskins vs Seahawks Handicapping the NFC Wild Card Playoffs

Seattle Seahawks: Defense could be the difference

Dating back to the 2007 NFL playoffs, the Seahawks are playing in their fourth Wild Card Weekend contest. Seattle hosted in each of the previous matches and they own a sparkling 3-0 record as they bumped off the Saints (’11) Redskins (’08) and Cowboys (’07). The Washington contest was close until Seattle scored 22 unanswered points late in the fourth quarter and soared to a 35-14 win. The final count will be closer here!

Russell Wilson watched as Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III were the top two selections in the 2012 NFL Draft. While Wilson had to know that would happen, he probably didn’t think quarterbacks Ryan Tannehill, Brandon Weeden and Brock Osweiler would get called before he did with the 75th overall selection. Willson was masterful in his rookie season as he finished 100.0 passer rating (4th best) and 30 total touchdowns.

Washington Redskins: The Master Plan is coming together in DC

Washington traded their first-round selections in 2012 (6th), 2013, and 2014, as well as their second-round selection in 2012 (39th), to move up from the sixth to second overall pick in order to select QB Robert Griffin III in the 2012 NFL Draft. RGIII was electrifying as a first year starter and was a key reason why Washington has returned to playoff prominence. They’ll be partying like it’s 1999 and FedEx Field will be rocking today!

While Griffin gets the headlines,, unheralded sixth-round draft selection (173rd) RB Alfred Morris played a major role in the Redskins resurgent. Morris recorded 1,613 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns in his first season. Those numbers include a 200 yard ( 3 TD) performance in Week 17 as Washington locked up the NFC East title with a win against the Cowboys. Morris gets a tough test against the Seahawks D today.

Washington vs Seattle Betting Lines and Online Sports Betting Prediction

Bovada.lv is the lines supplier for our Seahawks vs Redskins prediction. Seattle is currently listed as -3 (-105) point road chalk ATS and -150 on the money line. Washington is posted as home dogs at +3 (-115) ATS and +130 straight up while the Over/Under has been set at 46 total points. Seattle games surpassed 46 points just six times this season (3 of last 4) while Washington contests went over 46 points with a 9-5-2 record.

When handicapping this contest we kept going away from the battle of the rookie quarterbacks who we view as equals. We also see even match-ups at the running back and receivers positions. As such, we were drawn to the defensive prowess of these two clubs. Seattle yielded 4,899 total yards and 15.3 points per game on defense this season while Washington was much more generous allowing 6,043 YPG and 24.3 PPG.

Those numbers can’t be ignored and gives Seattle a huge advantage in this contest. The Seahawks also get back the second half of their dynamic dual at cornerback as Brandon Browner returns from a four game drug suspension to rejoin Richard Sherman in the Seattle secondary. We like the Seahawks as the only road team to win this weekend so give us Seattle at -3 (-105) at the Bovada online sportsbook!
