Seattle Seahawks: Defense could be the difference

Dating back to the 2007 NFL playoffs, the Seahawks are playing in their fourth Wild Card Weekend contest. Seattle hosted in each of the previous matches and they own a sparkling 3-0 record as they bumped off the Saints (’11) Redskins (’08) and Cowboys (’07). The Washington contest was close until Seattle scored 22 unanswered points late in the fourth quarter and soared to a 35-14 win. The final count will be closer here!

Russell Wilson watched as Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III were the top two selections in the 2012 NFL Draft. While Wilson had to know that would happen, he probably didn’t think quarterbacks Ryan Tannehill, Brandon Weeden and Brock Osweiler would get called before he did with the 75th overall selection. Willson was masterful in his rookie season as he finished 100.0 passer rating (4th best) and 30 total touchdowns.

Washington traded their first-round selections in 2012 (6th), 2013, and 2014, as well as their second-round selection in 2012 (39th), to move up from the sixth to second overall pick in order to select QB Robert Griffin III in the 2012 NFL Draft. RGIII was electrifying as a first year starter and was a key reason why Washington has returned to playoff prominence. They’ll be partying like it’s 1999 and FedEx Field will be rocking today!

While Griffin gets the headlines,, unheralded sixth-round draft selection (173rd) RB Alfred Morris played a major role in the Redskins resurgent. Morris recorded 1,613 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns in his first season. Those numbers include a 200 yard ( 3 TD) performance in Week 17 as Washington locked up the NFC East title with a win against the Cowboys. Morris gets a tough test against the Seahawks D today.

The Seahawks also get back the second half of their dynamic dual at cornerback as Brandon Browner returns from a four game drug suspension to rejoin Richard Sherman in the Seattle secondary.
