Forget everything you thought you knew about betting on the New Orleans Pelicans, one of the NBA’s foremost disappointments, moving forward. They struck a trade for DeMarcus Cousins, a top-10 NBA player, and now have the two best big men in the game between him and Anthony Davis. It will take some time for these two to jel; the Pelicans won’t reap the full benefits of their presence until next season. But the team will be much better than it has been in years past.
Will this make the Pelicans championship contenders? That much is tough to say.
The Golden State Warriors, Houston Rockets and San Antonio Spurs all exist, so that’s something to consider both in the short and long terms. The Pelicans must also figure out how to build up the rest of their roster while committing so much money to the frontcourt, and that’s going to be a challenge. Shallow rosters are not conducive to success, even when you have two top-10 stars in tow.
Still, we’d be lying if we said the Pelicans’ betting appeal wasn’t on the verge of exploding.

New Orleans Pelicans Betting Tips
Patience is going to be key when betting on the New Orleans Pelicans. Anthony Davis and DeMarcus Cousins must mesh together first, before they can be much of a threat on any front.
In the meantime, it’s probably best to holster all bets until the 2017-18 season. You can be opportunistic with single-game spreads, when you believe the Pelicans are going to win, but they have had some trouble covering any kind of lines since Cousins’ arrival. This is to be expected, but it doesn’t make life any easier on you.
It’s the same deal with their playoff potential. So many people thought they would instantly enter the realm of relevancy with Cousins. They haven’t. So stay away from their conference and championship futures. They aren’t even a viable long shot right now, and yet sporstbooks, due to the Davis-Cousins pairing, view them as borderline favorites.
Leading into the next year or two, when the Pelicans have an opportunity to flesh out the rest of the roster, is when you should strike. See if you can spot favorable win projections that allow you to play the over or under. Take stock of their offseason additions and subtractions, then decide whether they might be worth a go as a dark-horse championship play.
As far as a team identity goes, you have to wait a bit longer.
It’s rare that you know a team is going to be good without understanding how it plays, but that’s the case here. The Pelicans have enough star power to tread water above .500 in the coming seasons, but we don’t yet know whether they’ll be an offense-first or defense-first squad. They could be both. We have to wait until next season to see.
Once it becomes clear what type of team they are, you can start getting heavily into spreads and the over/under. You’ll also have the green light to dabble in more of their futures. Right now, given how new the situation is, it’s all about waiting to reach that point.
