Premier League Top Goal Scorers 2017

Premier League Top Goal Scorers 2017
There are few things in soccer that are better than seeing a player score a spectacular goal, then wheel off towards their supporters to celebrate. Some do this more than others, here are my tips for 2016-17 Premier League top scorers.

Top Scorers Predictions EPL

By Matt Pitt

The English Premier League has more than its fair share of talented forwards and strikers, which is one of the reasons it is one of the most popular soccer leagues in the world; everyone loves seeing goals scored.

Not all forwards are created equal, however, some find the net with alarming regularity, others not as much, so before you place a wager on the 2016-17 Premier League top goal scorer, I advise you read these tips.

Hot Favorites To Be Top Goal Scorer

Sergio Aguero at +350

Sergio Aguero

Manchester City’s Argentinian star Sergio Aguero starts the season as the +350 favorite to finish as the Premier League’s top goal scorer in the 2016-17 season, and when you look at his statistics it is easy to see why.

In his first season with Man City, Aguero scored 23 goals in 34 games, an impressive total that he beat in 2014-15 and 2015-16 when he scored 26 in 33, and 24 in 30 respectively. To date, Aguero has scored 102 goals in 150 Premier League games, quite phenomenal really.

Aguero’s 24-goal haul last season was joint second with Jamie Vardy, and one behind Harry Kane, yet he played 1,000 minutes, that’s more than 11 games, less than Kane!

This season, Man City have strengthened their squad significantly, meaning Aguero will get better service. If he can put in a full season, he should walk away with the title of top goal scorer.

Harry Kane at +500

Harry Kane

Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane averaged a goal every 135 minutes last season, finishing with 25 goals and the Golden Boot.

Since breaking into the Spurs starting 11, Kane, now 23-years-old, has scored 46 goals in 72 over the past two seasons, and should bag another 20 or more in the coming season.

Kane had a very disappointing European Championships with England, and was singled out by the British press as being a big underperformer. Kane will be eager to prove the doubters wrong, which makes the +500 odds on him being top goal scorer a good bet.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic at +900

Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Manchester United Zlatan Ibrahimovic has scored goals wherever he has played, in fact he has 392 goals in 677 career appearances across all competitions.

“Ibra” hit 38 goals in 31 league games for Paris Saint-Germain last season, and while he will not get anywhere near that impressive total for his new side in the Premier League, I’d fully expect him to score between 15 and 20 goals.

Whether that is enough to see him finish as top scorer in the league is unlikely, but you never know with Ibrahimovic, he could go on and score a hatful of goals because he’s only score fewer than 20 goals once in the past five seasons, and even then he scored 19 of them.

Outside Chance To Be Top Goal Scorer

Daniel Sturridge at +2000

Daniel Sturridge

Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge is one of soccer’s natural goal scorers. He can score poacher’s goals, or 25-yard screamers, but he has been plagued with injuries all of his career.

Since joining Liver pool from Chelsea, Sturridge has scored 43 goals in 69 games, but those games span four seasons. In 2014-15, Sturridge only played 12 games (four goals), and 14 games (eight goals) last season.

If, and it is a huge if, Sturridge can stay fit for 30 games this season, he could be a shrewd bet to finish as top scorer at +2000. If not, he’ll likely be top scorer for the hospital soccer team; shame you cannot bet on that market!

Players To Avoid

Diego Costa at +1200

Diego Costa

At +1200, Chelsea’s Diego Costa is the joint fourth favorite for the Golden boot with Michy Batshuayi and Romelu Lukaku, yet I would advise to steer clear of the often controversial frontman.

My reasoning for this, despite Costa scoring 32 goals in 54 Premier League games, is all close season there has been speculation about Costa leaving Chelsea and returning to Spain. This move is likely to happen, especially if Costa finds himself in hot water with the FA again due to his aggressive style of play.

Wayne Rooney at +3300

Wayne Rooney

He may be the Premier League’s second top scorer of all time, England’s top scorer, and likely to become Manchester United’s all time top scorer this season, but avoid betting on Wayne Rooney like the plague!

Rooney has only scored 20+ goals twice in his career, back in 2009-10 and 2011-12, and now he plays in a deeper role for club and country, he is even less likely to get into double figures for the season, especially as Ibrahimovic is likely to demand to take any penalty kicks.

+3300 is nowhere near long enough to bet on Rooney, I’d be wanting +5000 minimum and even then probably wouldn’t bet on him.
