In the United States, greyhound racing and betting on greyhounds have been hand in hand for a number of years. While greyhound racing isn’t and can’t technically be a professional sport – it can only be amateur, the activity brings in plenty of wagers year after year. Every day, sportsbooks publish an array of greyhound betting odds.

The latest Greyhound racing odds are now available. There are races constantly popping up, so keep checking back with this page to get the latest odds. The odds were last updated on May 18, 2023:

Greyhound racing can be traced back to the 1870s and the eventual addition of parimutuel betting was added in the 1930s. To this day, some states do have legalized greyhound racing, as it fell under the same categories as horse racing – and wasn’t technically a sport to be bet on. In some states when PASPA was implemented in 1992, they chose to keep greyhound and horse betting open.

Greyhound racing in America is governed by state or local law. The AGC “American Greyhound Council” regulates and monitors the care of the dogs, partnered with the National Greyhound Association.

You can find Greyhound racing in Alabama, Arkansas, Iowa, Texas, and West Virginia currently, and over fifteen states allow simulcast betting on greyhound racing in other states. Greyhound racing has been banned in many countries, with only the United States, Australia, Ireland, Mexico, Spain, Macau, and the UK having legal forms of greyhound racing and betting.

The more recent numbers, however, show a vast decrease in greyhound racing interest. In the past twenty years, the amount gambled on greyhounds has decreased by over 70%. This is mainly due to the inhumane methods of the sport – accounting for over 1,000 greyhound deaths per year.

However, people seem to be still betting on dog racing, so sportsbooks will continue to offer odds. If you can find a pari-mutuel betting location or even better – a track in your state, they will offer betting odds on any dog race.

If neither of those options is available to you, it would be a good idea to look at online sportsbooks that are based offshore. They will offer greyhound betting options on popular dog races and events like the English Greyhound Derby and Irish Greyhound Derby.

How to bet on Greyhound Racing

While you may never make a living betting on the greyhounds, you can create a greyhound betting strategy instead of betting blindly. First, you’ll need some sound gambling knowledge, an understanding of the tracks, and a strategy when looking at the dogs in the race.

A greyhound race can take thirty seconds or less, so while it doesn’t make sense to put a ton of time or effort into betting on something that takes so little time, it can definitely payout in the long run if you are strategic.

If you’re familiar with horse racing, you will likely have a leg up on the competition. Dog racing uses the same terminology and betting types when referring to dog racing betting options and types.

Greyhound Single Bet

A single bet is the most popular greyhound betting option, as it’s the easiest to understand. You simply pick a dog to win a certain race. If the dog wins, you win, and if the dog doesn’t place first, you lose. It’s as simple as that.

You can also do an either way bet with this type. Either way allows for a slight margin of error, meaning you can bet on a dog to place in the top three, as long as the dog places first, second or third, you will win your bet.

Greyhound Multiples Bet

A multiples bet, or an accumulator as it’s commonly called in dog betting, resembles a parlay in regular professional sports betting. You will combine the odds of multiple bets, which will make the bet more risky and ultimately offer a larger payout in the end.

You could combine 2/1 odds with 3/1 odds to create a 6/1 odds bet slip. This would be called a double. A three-leg accumulator is called a treble, and then four bets is a four-fold, five-fold, and more.

Greyhound Forecast Bet

When forecast betting on a dog race, you will need to choose two greyhounds. The two greyhounds will have to place in the top two placements. You are picking the dog to win and the runner up and both have to place in the spots you select. If your runner up choice places first, you will lose your bet.

Greyhound Trifecta Bet

The trifecta bet in greyhound wagering has the exact same principles as the forecast bet – except you have to pick the top three. The odds of trifecta betting will be much higher, as it can be extremely challenging to predict the top three placing dogs for any given race.

Greyhound Quinella Bet

A quinella bet is similar to a forecast bet, meaning you are again choosing two dogs – but they can finish in either of the top two placements. This is the same principle as an either-way bet mentioned above – you just have to pick the top two dogs, it doesn’t matter which one places first.

Greyhound Exacta Bet

Another wagering type that’s similar to the trifecta bet, but with the quinella rules. You are picking the top three dogs – and it doesn’t matter where they place in the top three. You simply select three dogs and as long as the three of them place, your bet will cash.

Greyhound Pick 3 and Pick 6 Bets

A Pick 3 or Pick 6 is a betting type where you will bet on the winner, three or six races in a row, respectively. This is not an overly popular greyhound betting type because the likelihood of your wager cashing is lower than low. You can win huge amounts on this bet, but many choose to bet the minimums and only gamble money that they are okay with losing.

Top Online Sportsbooks for Betting on Greyhound Odds

Whether you’re a novice or expert, you can find some value betting on any given greyhound race or event. It’s recommended to start at Derby events where there are plenty of races to wager on and get a good feel for betting on the dogs.

You will need to find a sportsbook that offers dog racing odds, and a good selection of them. If you can find a sportsbook that offers a good amount of the dog racing odds above (even better if they offer all of them), you are in good company and that site would be perfect for you.

Not all sportsbooks are the same, so some offer better odds, perks, and options than others. Before signing up at any site, be sure to read some sportsbook reviews and find the sportsbook that best suits your needs.

Looking to pay with Bitcoin? Some sportsbooks offer limited deposit options, so making sure your preferred sportsbook has your desired deposit and withdrawal options are pretty important criteria that are commonly overlooked. If you are looking to bet from your smartphone, a sportsbook with a mobile app or a mobile-friendly site will be an important thing to look for. Nothing is worse than signing up to bet, then a race begins and you aren’t home on your laptop - and you can’t access the site from your device.

We have taken some of the guesswork out for you - we have created a list of the top online sportsbooks in the industry, and created comprehensive sportsbook reviews for you to peruse before signing up for a site.

Check them out and have fun betting on the greyhounds - and as always, please bet responsibly.
