Belmont Derby Invitational 2017

Belmont Derby invitational odds

Brian Lynch trainee and 2016 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf winner Oscar Performance will be making his second consecutive start on the Belmont turf and has been installed as the 3-1 morning line favorite for the Belmont Derby.

He took the field wire-to-wire last time out in the (G3) Pennine Ridge Stakes, a race that started slowly but ended fast, closing at 22.72 for the fourth quarter mile and 10.98 seconds for the last 1/8th. He hit the finish line 1 1/2 lengths in front of Good Samaritan (12-1), who was himself a head in front of Ticonderoga (15-1), both of whom are in the Belmont Derby field.

Prior to that, Oscar Performance was a disappointing 10th going in as the favorite in the (G2) American Turf Stakes at Churchill, a race that was won by Derby starter Arklow (8-1). From the barn of Brad Cox and ridden by Hall of Famer Mike Smith, the son of graded-stakes winning Arch went winless in his first five career starts on the dirt, was switched to turf two races back and has scored two wins. While the competiton gets tougher here, he's seems like a natural play in the exotics.

The always formidable Aiden O'Brien ships in two starters from his base in Ireland, with both making their first start on US soil, and both getting first-time lasix. While first glance would indicate Homesman (4-1) is the better of the pair, with a Group 3 win to his name back in May, Whitecliffsofdover (10-1) finished in the money in five consecutive starts prior to a poor outing last time at Ascot and will likely offer much better betting value.

Another top Euro invader, Called To The Bar (5-1), is an Irish bred who has raced four times in France and has never finished lower than second, last time out leading all the way and winning a tough Group 3 race at St. Cloud.

Japan-bred Yoshida (7-2) rounds out the frontrunners. He is a lightly raced colt who has made all three of his lifetime starts in the US for trainer Bill Mott, and has a two consecutive wins to his name, the last of which was a minor stakes at Pimlico on the Preakness Stakes undercard. He overcame a poor start to rally from last in a 12-horse field to win by four lengths racing a flat mile in that race, so he should love the stretch out in distance here.

The Belmont Derby Invitational goes Saturday, July 8 from Belmont Park, with a post time of 6:50 PM Eastern. You can wager online on the day of the race by visiting Today's Tracks in the Bovada racebook, or with one of our other top-rated online wagering sites.
