Breeders' Cup 2016 Sprints

Breeders' Cup Sprint 2016

Breeders' Cup

The Breeders’ Cup Sprint showcases some of the fastest horses in the world. From nine colts and geldings in the race, there is a massive disparity between the top tier contenders and longshots.

A.P. Indian is a perfect six for six this year, and while he will not have the home track advantage of some of his rivals, it is difficult to argue with his flawless record. He was all out to beat a lesser rival last time out and will have a tougher task. But his ability to potentially rate just off of a torrid pace could work to his advantage.

Lord Nelson is also undefeated this year and this colt has matured into one of the best sprinters in the country. His greatest strength is his experience at Santa Anita – he has five wins from eight starts.

Masochistic is the likely favorite and is potentially the fastest horse in the race. He's only had two starts this year, one of which coming in an optional claiming race. There is no denying his talent but the strategy of coming into this race with so few races could backfire.

Drefong passed the class test with flying colors in the Kings Bishop Stakes and will now tackle older horses for the first time. While he lacks experience, he has done very little wrong in his abbreviated career and has reportedly been very impressive in the mornings at Santa Anita.

The Breeders’ Cup Sprint is on Saturday, November 5 from Santa Anita. Post time is 4:21 p.m. EST.

1) #5 A.P. Indian

2) #6 Lord Nelson

3) #7 Masochistic

4) #2 Drefong

Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint 2016

Though the Turf Sprint is a relatively new addition to the Breeders’ Cup landscape, it gets even more exciting at Santa Anita as it will be contested over their downhill turf course.

Obviously (IRE) will be making his fifth Breeders’ Cup appearance. It's his first time in a race other than the Mile. This veteran gelding has always kept world class company and is a legitimate gate to wire threat, especially with the cut back in distance over his favorite turf course.

Washington DC headlines a strong European contingent and the international shippers are always dangerous on the turf. He has been keeping good company in Europe and his consistency should work in his favor. The only question will be whether he takes to Santa Anita’s tight, firm turf course.

Mongolian Saturday pulled off a narrow upset in this race last year. His form has been inconsistent this year, but he could pop up and surprise again. He had an encouraging return to the US after a globetrotting campaign this year and has been training very well at Santa Anita.

Undrafted is owned in part by former wide receiver Wes Welker and this six-year-old gelding gets points for his consistency. He runs his race nearly every single time over practically any surface. While he does need a solid pace and a clean trip to be a factor, he could hit the board and fill out an exotic wager at a generous price.

1) #2 Obviously (IRE)

2) #8 Washington DC

3) #3 Mongolian Saturday

4) #11 Undrafted

The Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint is on Saturday, November 5 from Santa Anita. Post time is 5:05 p.m. EST
