Delaware Handicap 2017 Preview

Songbird to win the Delaware Handicap

Since making her debut at Del Mar Race Track for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer in 2015, Songbird has been nothing short of sensational. She won four straight in her first season, including the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies on her way to being named the Eclipse Award Champion Two-Year-Old Filly. She followed that up by winning her first seven races of last year, missing the perfect score by a nose when she was beaten by the older mare Beholder in the 2016 Breeders' Cup Distaff.

She then picked up right where she left off in 2017, taking the field wire-to-wire to win the (G1) Ogden Phipps Stakes in her seasonal bow. She makes her second start of the year this Saturday in the Delaware Handicap, where she has been made the obvious morning line favorite at odds of 1-5. She'll have regular rider Mike Smith in the irons when she breaks from post #5, and you can expect her to go right to the lead again and dare the rest to catch her.

If there's any concern, it's that she'll carry high weight of 124 pounds, giving away anywhere between nine and 13 pounds to the rest of the field. She's won at 1 1/4 miles before, but the difference in the weights might give the field some hope that she'll tire deep in the stretch drive.

Otherwise the race is for second place, and the odds should be generous. Second choice in the ML at 6-1 is Weep No More. A Grade 1 stakes winner last year at Keeneland, she has been out of the money in five starts since then, including two so far this year. Expect her to be coming late in the stretch run to try and pick up a piece.

All of the rest of the field will be taking a major step up in class in tangling with the likes of Songbird. At age seven, Ontario-bred Line Of Best Fit (12-1) has 15 wins and 26 in-the-money finishes in her 38-race career, but she hasn't raced at even the minor-stakes level in almost four years.

In similar fashion, Martini Glass has won 7 of her 14 lifetime starts, but she has no stakes wins of any kind to her name. Perhaps in her favor, she does have several starts on the Delaware Park dirt, running second last out by a neck as the favorite in the ungraded Obeah Stakes.

The Delaware Handicap goes Saturday, July 15 from Delaware Park, with a post time of 5:30 PM Eastern. You can bet the day of the race by going to Today's Tracks at Bovada, or one of our other highly recommended online racebooks.
