Dubai World Cup Field

Dubai World Cup 2017 Picks

By Jessica Paquette

The field is set for the 2017 renewal of the $10 million Dubai World Cup from Meydan Racecourse. The race has attracted a star-studded international field which is topped by the superstar, Arrogate, who will be trying to secure his position as the top racehorse in not only the United States but in the world.

All eyes will be on the Bob Baffert trained Arrogate, who has won six of his seven starts. After closing out his three-year-old season with a victory in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1), he returned to action to win the inaugural running of the $12 million Pegasus World Cup (G1) at Gulfstream Park which boosted his career earnings to in excess of $11 million.

A son of Unbridled’s Song owned by Juddmonte Farms, Arrogate has reportedly taken to the track at Meydan well and has been training strongly since making the trip.

Though on paper the gray colt towers over his opponents, he will have some competition both from familiar domestic rivals as well as from some new international adversaries. Gun Runner, third behind Arrogate in the Travers (G1) last summer, will be back for a rematch after winning his last two starts. The chestnut son of Candy Ride, trained by Steve Asmussen, is a seven-time winner and made his four-year-old debut a winning one with an impressive score in the Razorback Handicap (G3) at Oaklawn Park.

Arrogate’s greatest threat could come from his own stablemate – Hoppertunity. The hard-knocking veteran will be making his second trip to Dubai after running a competitive third behind California Chrome last year. The six-year-old son of Any Given Saturday is as consistent as they come and has been on the board in 17 of his 25 starts. He has finished lower than fourth only once and turned in a sharp performance last time out to win the San Antonio Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita, subsequently clocking a bullet workout since that victory.

Lani is one of the biggest dark horses in the race. A well-bred colt who has developed a reputation for being quirky and difficult both before and during his races, he has struggled mightily since a third-place finish in the Belmont Stakes (G1) last summer and his training could be described as erratic at best. It is worth remembering that he stamped his ticket to the Kentucky Derby (G1) last year with a victory in the UAE Derby (G2) on the World Cup undercard and has proven he can win over this track which does give him an advantage over several rivals.

Here is the field for the 2017 edition of the Dubai World Cup.
