The Breeders' Cup began in 1984 as a one-day series of championship races to mark the unofficial end of the North American racing season. The first Breeders' Cup was held at Hollywood Park in California with seven races for a purse of $10 million, including $3 million for the Breeders' Cup Classic. Since then the BC has expanded to a two-day event, with 13 races and a purse of $28 million, including $6 million up for grabs in the Classic. Over the years the BC has been held at different tracks throughout North America. The 2016 Breeders' Cup will be held November 4 & 5 at Santa Anita Race Track in California.
