The Breeders’ Cup Classic is the centerpiece of the star-studded Breeders’ Cup weekend and is one of the richest races in the world with a purse of $6 million on the line. The race is contested at a mile and a quarter on the main track and has a history of showcasing the greatest champions in the sport. Last year, American Pharoah concluded his career and paid $3.20 to win as the favorite.

How To Win Breeders' Cup Classic Bets

The Breeders’ Cup Classic is Race 13 on the Breeders’ Cup weekend and goes on Saturday, November 5th from Santa Anita. Post time is 5:35 p.m. PST.

      Probable starters with odds

      1. California Chrome (7-5) – Unbeatable is a big word, but he might be just that. He has been exceptional this year and will benefit further from home track advantage.
      2. Arrogate (7-2) –How good is he? He looked like a freak in the Travers but has plenty of questions to answer including training up to the Classic without a prep. It worked for American Pharoah, but can Baffert pull it off twice?
      3. Frosted (6-1) – He is fast enough to keep CC honest. His best is good enough to be a contender but his strengths are best suited to a one-turn mile.
      4. Melatonin (12-1) – It is asking a lot for a horse to overcome another EPM related setback and win one of the biggest races in the country. He likes Santa Anita, though.
      5. Hoppertunity (15-1) – Stepped up and got a big win in the JCGC after a long streak of being an also-ran. Has rarely been good enough to win against the top horses but has always been able to hold his own.
      6. Nyquist (15-1) – While a longshot, it is worth remembering he is already a Breeders’ Cup winner and won the Kentucky Derby. This colt is not a one-hit wonder and the time off since the Pennsylvania Derby may have been one he needed.
      7. Effinex (20-1) – He did finish second to American Pharoah last year but has hardly seemed to be the same sort of racehorse in 2016. A lot of excuses, not a lot of wins.
      8. Gun Runner (20-1) – You have to respect that he runs his race nearly every time. This colt seems to be physically maturing and could be a sneaky contender.
      9. Shaman Ghost (20-1) – No question about whether or not the distance is ideal for him but the class level is a big question mark. He is a solid Grade 2 or Grade 3 sort of racehorse.
      10.  Win the Space (30-1) – Another outside longshot with dubious credentials. He is proven at Santa Anita, though, which could help him.

All entries are unofficial. Final entries and Post Position Draw for the Breeders' Cup Classic will take place on Monday, October 31.
