Remaining Dates to Know for 2018 MLB Season

MLB World Series Odds come courtesy of 5Dimes and are accurate as of Tuesday, July 25. These lines will change between now and the end of the season, so make sure you confirm them with your own sportsbook of choice before submitting a ticker. The most recent lines are included more so as a general service—for those who might invest in them immediately, or as a frame of reference for those who like to track how odds for certain teams may move throughout the year.

July 31, 2018: Non-Waivers Trade Deadline

This will be when player movement throughout MLB typically stops. Different types of transactions can still be made on the waiver wire, but for the most part, the more impactful player swaps and transactions will be in the books until the offseason.

By extension, this also marks one of the last times you'll have the most robust selections when looking at World Series odds. The playoff picture has already started thinning out, but there are plenty of long-shot options and dark-horse candidates for you to consider. That being said, they will start to dwindle in number before being ripped from the tangible possibilities section the closer we get to September.

It's also worth noting that you'll probably want to holster single-game wagers for July 31 itself, and perhaps the day after. It can take a little while for players to pass physicals when they're traded at the last minute, so teams could be operating shorthanded, without important pieces to their puzzle.

And as a final note here, you may not be able to play World Series wagers for too long on July 31. Sportsbooks tend to displace teams who make major moves from the pool for the day until they have time to adjust. These clubs typically re-appear the next day, but this is worthwhile food for thought if you're looking to make sure you get a World Series wager in before the start of August.

September 1, 2018: Active Rosters Expand To 40 Players

Right about here is when you'll get the strongest feel for how teams are structuring their approach for the rest of the season. It's also probably the very last time you'll want to consider making World Series bets. The list of realistic possibilities will have narrowed down to inside a dozen or so squads by this point, and the potential returns on your investments won't get any more lucrative as the regular season inches toward its close.

September 30, 2018: Final Day Of Regular Season

playoffs begin

If you have not placed your World Series bets by this point, or if you're simply looking to adjust an initial botched investment, this should be the absolute last time you look to work these lines. World Series odds aren't worth too much when the field gets down to the actual playoff bracket, so submitting wagers before the opening pitch of final games, when certain postseason scenarios are still playing out, is your best course of action.

October 2, 2018: Playoffs Begin

All of your World Series bets really need to be in by this point. The odds sportsbooks will be laying for each team, even if they remain relative long shots, won't be pretty.

As the playoffs begin, you will want to shift to single-game mode and series packages. Something to consider throughout this process: Series prices can get fairly lucrative if you're betting on underdogs after they lose Game 1 (non-play-in rounds, of course).

This isn't a foolproof plan, because you need to have legitimate faith in said underdog. Still, it's worth contemplating if you're looking to drum up your potential returns.

Consider sniffing around MLB's prop section as well. These against-the-grain bets typically adhere to series- or postseason-long wagers, and they provide a nice change of pace from the regular, run-of-the-mill single-game bets you're often forced to live on this time of year.

October 23, 2018: World Series Begins

world series

At this point, with just the National League and American League representatives remaining, you're tethered strictly to single-game outcomes and props unless you want to work underdog series prices following an initial deficit.

Sometimes, there can be a decided underdog before the World Series even kicks off. If the reigning-champion Houston Astros make the cut, for example, they will be probably be heavily favored over whomever they are facing.

Investing in the underdog at that time is fine, but make sure you have done your homework first. Look at the stats from the season series between the two participating teams. Monitor the breaking news wire for major injuries. Be aware of any slumps or hot streaks from either team, both on the defensive side of the field and at the plate. Study the pitching rotations. Simply put: Be prepared.

Sportsbooks should also increase their live-betting offerings during the World Series as well. These wagers will not offer you a clear path to getting rich, but it will give you an opportunity to invest in mid-game spreads and moneylines, both of which can be fairly lucrative if you're again rolling with the mid-stream underdog. There will be live-betting over/under lines and certain props to choose from as well. Definitely make these a part of your World Series rapport if you're bored with the monotony of single-game odds or even mid-series packages.

This year's best-of-seven World Series set will end no later than October 31, at which time you're free to begin prepping for MLB offseason props or zero in on the upcoming NFL season.
