Rockies At Angels Looking To Avoid 10-Game Losing Streak

The Colorado Rockies were contending in the NL West for a while there but it clearly all was a mirage as the team is now in the basement of the division with nine straight losses entering Tuesday interleague series opener at the Los Angeles Angels. They are big -181 favorites at BetOnline with a total of eight runs.

As Usual, Pitching The Issue

The Rockies' team ERA of 5.47 is by far the worst in the majors -- No. 29 Boston is at 4.97. Rockies starters, last in the NL with a 5.66 ERA, have been dreadful with an 8.86 mark during a losing skid that's tied for the fourth longest in franchise history. Colorado (11-17) hasn't dropped 10 in a row since April 24-May 7, 2005. The team record for consecutive losses is 13 set July 25-Aug. 6, 1993. On Sunday, starter Jorge De La Rosa walked six, gave up five runs and lasted four innings -- the rotation's 19th start of fewer than six innings this season.

"Honestly, good teams don't go through this," Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado said. "We need to find a way to get out of it. I believe we're a good team. But right now, we're not playing at a high level."

Rockies general manager Jeff Bridich said that the team's streak is equally due to the underperformance of the offense and the pitching staff, and he challenged the players to play better.

"We have a good collection of players," said Bridich, the first-year GM. "And at this point, meaning the last two weeks of the season, they've added up to a bad team. I don't think there's any other way you can look at it. That's not saying anything shocking. The players know that.

Bridich said the problem isn't manager Walt Weiss or the coaching staff, and he likes this roster, when it performs to its potential. The Rockies lead the NL and are second in the majors in hitting at .274, and fifth in OPS at .761 heading into play Monday, but somehow have managed to score the fourth-fewest runs at 113.

Probable Pitchers

Kyle Kendrick (1-4, 8.73) gets the start for Colorado. Kendrick gave up two deflating home runs and failed to take advantage of the offense's five-run output against Padres ace James Shields in a loss at Petco Park in his last outing on May 3. Kendrick was signed as a free agent to pitch deep into games. Although he has gone seven innings twice, he hasn't exceeded five in any other starts. Colorado's rotation is averaging a majors-worst 5 1/3 innings per start. Hitters have touched Kendrick for 10 home runs, tied for second most in the NL. Just three current Angels, all former National League players, have faced Kendrick. Albert Pujols is 2 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs. David Freese is 4 for 11. Chris Iannetta is 2 for 8.

It's lefty C.J. Wilson for the Angels. Wilson (1-2, 2.70 ERA) has allowed two runs or less in five of his six starts this season, and in each of his past four. In his last start, Wednesday against the Mariners, Wilson took a seven-inning no-decision, allowing two earned runs on seven hits. He's only faced the Rockies once in his long career, defeating them, 7-2, on the road June 8, 2012. He went eight innings, allowed one run, and struck out nine.
