Hawks Face Must Win At Home Vs. Nets In Game 5

A No. 8 seed almost never beats a No. 1 in the NBA playoffs but the Brooklyn Nets can get on the doorstep of a big upset of the top-seeded Atlanta Hawks with the series tied 2-2. The Hawks are 9-point home favorites at Bovada for Wednesday's Game 5 back in Atlanta. It's a high number considering the Nets have won the past two games and nearly stole Game 2 in Atlanta.

Stats To Know

Through four games in this series, the Nets have outscored the Hawks 394-393 (+1). In four regular season matchups, all Atlanta wins, the Hawks outscored the Nets 456-387 (-69). All four Nets/Hawks postseason games have been decided by single digits. No other series in this year’s postseason has seen every game decided by single digits.

Brooklyn won Game 4 120-115 in overtime behind a career playoff-high tying 35 points from Deron Williams, who had totaled just five points combined in the previous two games. He established a new Nets’ single game playoff high with seven 3-pointers (on 11 attempts) and added seven assists and three steals in 46 minutes. D-Will had previously scored 35 points in a playoff game on 4/21/09 with the Jazz at the Lakers. Williams is just the second player in this postseason to make seven 3-pointers in a game, joining Stephen Curry (made seven on 4/23 vs. New Orleans). His 35 points marked the most scored by a Net in a playoff game since Vince Carter scored 37 points in Game 3 of the 2007 Eastern Conference First Round against the Raptors (4/27/07).

Williams scored 27 of his 35 points in the first and fourth quarters (11 in the first, 16 in the fourth). He had scored more than 11 points just once in his past eight full games. Williams also recorded just two turnovers in the game. Prior to D-Will’s Game 4 performance, the last Nets’ guard to score 35+ points with two or fewer turnovers was Drazen Petrovic (40 points, one turnover) in Game 1 of the 1992 Eastern Conference First Round at Cleveland on 4/23/92.

Jeff Teague (20 points/11 assists), Paul Millsap (16 points/12 rebounds) and Kyle Korver (16 points/11 boards) all recorded double-doubles in Game 4 at Brooklyn (4/27). It is the first time Atlanta has had three players with double-doubles in the same playoff game since Mookie Blaylock, Christian Laettner and Dikembe Mutombo turned the trick at Detroit on 5/2/97. However, Korver was just 4-for-13 from 3-point range and missed three of them in the final minute. He led the NBA in 3-point percentage during the season.

More Numbers

In Games 1 and 2 combined, the Nets were outscored 61-44 (-17) in first quarters. In Games 3 and 4 combined, the Nets outscored the Hawks 56-40 (+16) in first quarters. The team leading at the end of the first quarter is 4-0 in this series. In Games 1 and 2 combined, the Nets committed 33 turnovers while forcing just 23 (-10). In Games 3 and 4 combined, the Nets committed just 25 turnovers while forcing 34 turnovers (+9). The team with fewer turnovers is 4-0 in this series.
