Mavericks Could Be Down 2 Players For Game 2 At Rockets

The Dallas Mavericks will try to avoid a 2-0 hole to the Rockets on Tuesday night in Houston, but the Mavs could be without starting small forward Chandler Parsons and key reserve guard Devin Harris due to injuries. Houston opened as a 5-point favorite at Bovada. On the series line, Houston is -425 and Dallas +355.

Game-Time Call Likely

Coach Rick Carlisle said the status of both players could be game-time decisions after neither practiced Monday. Parsons is dealing with soreness in his right knee, which caused him to miss the final six games of the regular season. He played 37 minutes in the Mavs’ Game 1 loss despite pain significant enough for him to retreat to the locker room during the second quarter to be evaluated by the team’s medical staff.

Harris played only 10 minutes in Game 1, sitting out the second half because of issues with his big toe and second toe on his left foot. A case of turf toe in his left big toe caused Harris to miss the final game of the regular season. He aggravated that condition during Game 1. If both guys are on the sidelines, it would mean Richard Jefferson is likely to start with increased minutes for Al-Farouq Aminu. As for Harris' absence, that would open the door for more J.J. Barea.

Rockets Won Game 1 Rather Easily

Houston took Game 1 118-108 as James Harden led seven Rockets in double figures with 24 points. Corey Brewer led the way in the fourth quarter, scoring 13 of his 15 points. Brewer made three 3-pointers in about three minutes in the fourth to keep the Mavericks at bay. Josh Smith came off the bench and scored 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds along with two blocks in 25 minutes.

Dirk Nowitzki kept the Mavs in the game with his shooting, knocking down 10 of 14 attempts from the floor during his 24-point performance. Center Tyson Chandler posted an 11-point, 18-rebound double-double, taking advantage of Houston Rockets counterpart Dwight Howard’s foul trouble. But it wasn't nearly enough. Ellis and Parsons both struggled, combining for only 26 points on 31 shots. Ellis had 16, going 5-of-16 from the floor despite making a couple of 3-pointers, ending a personal 25-day drought from behind the arc. Parsons had 10 points on 5-of-15 shooting in his return from a six-game absence.

Rockets coach Kevin McHale is concerned with the 14 offensive rebounds the Mavericks obtained and a majority of the 58 points allowed in the paint was a result of Howard sitting with foul trouble. McHale wants his team to defend the pick-and-roll better by improving the communication and movement

“We just got to come out aggressive especially on the defensive and,” Howard said. “We get stops, we’ll be able to get out and run and it doesn't give them an opportunity to set their defense up. We got to push the pace but make sure on the defensive end we lock down.”

In the first round, NBA teams clinch a best-of-seven series at a 95.2 percent clip after taking a 2-0 series lead. Of all series, NBA teams clinch series 93.9 percent of the time after taking a 2-0 lead.
