Wisconsin Can Clinch Big Ten Title With Win At Maryland

The fifth-ranked University of Wisconsin can clinch its first Big Ten regular-season championship since the 2007-08 season with a win at No. 14 Maryland on Tuesday night, the Terps' biggest game since joining the Big Ten. Wisconsin is a 5.5-point favorite at Bovada.

10 & Counting For UW

This is the lone meeting of the season between the two teams that have been atop the standings for much of the season. Wisconsin (25-2, 13-1) has a three-game lead on Maryland, Michigan State and Purdue. The Badgers beat Minnesota 63-53 on Saturday, their 10th straight victory. Bronson Koenig, whose 10 starts at point guard have coincided with the Badgers' 10-game winning streak, scored a career-high 17 points and likely Big Ten Player of the Year Frank Kaminsky scored 21. Koenig, who took over at point after Traevon Jackson suffered a broken foot, committed just two turnovers in 39 minutes against a Minnesota team that forced 18 per game. Wisconsin leads the nation in fewest turnovers at 7.4 per game, a pace that would set a new NCAA Division I record. Kaminsky has now scored 20+ points in 7 of his last 11 games and 10 times on the season.

The Badgers moved to 13-1 in the Big Ten for the first time in school history. UW is just the third team to start the conference season 13-1 or better since 2002 (Illinois was 14-0 in 2005 and Ohio State was 13-1 in 2010).  UW has now won 10 straight Big Ten games, the school's longest conference win streak since closing the 1940-41 season with 11 straight Big Ten wins. In limiting Minnesota to 53 points, the Badgers have held 20 of 27 opponent to 60 points or less this season. UW has held each of its last 5 opponents to 55 points or less. The Gophers did not make a free throw, the fourth time a UW opponent has failed to make a free throw during the Bo Ryan era.

Terps Still In Contention

Maryland (22-5, 10-4) beat Nebraska 69-65 in its last game Feb. 19 for a third straight win. Freshman star Melo Trimble scored 26 points on 7-for-9 shooting and made 10 of 11 free throws. He also led Maryland with six rebounds and five assists. Trimble has totaled 84 points in his last four games after scoring a combined seven vs. Ohio State and Penn State. Dez Wells and Jake Layman each scored 14 for the Terrapins.

Trimble was named one of 16 watch list finalists for the 2015 Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award. He has scored 20 or more points a team-high eight times this season, including three of the last four games. He is averaging 21 points per game during that span, shooting .615 from the floor (24-for-39) with a .906 mark from the charity stripe (29-for-32).

The Terps have been ranked in the Associated Press Top 25 poll for 13 straight weeks, the longest streak since 2002-03 when they were ranked all 19 weeks. Maryland was ranked 73 consecutive weeks from 1999-2003.

Maryland is 16-1 at home this season, with its lone loss coming to top-five ranked Virginia on Dec. 3 in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The Terps are outscoring opponents by an average of 12 points per game at home while posting 72.8 points per contest in College Park.

Key betting trends: Badgers are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 Tuesday games. Terrapins are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 Tuesday games. Terrapins are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games following a S.U. win. Terrapins are 1-7 ATS in their last 8 games vs. a team with a winning S.U. record. Terrapins are 1-7 ATS in their last 8 games overall.
