A Quick Look At 5 Monster Bowl Games On The Horizon

A Quick Look At 5 Monster Bowl Games On The Horizon
College football is overstuffed with bowl games at the moment and some are more valuable than others. Here's a look at five marquee bowl games that are on the horizon, including the two playoff tilts setting the stage for next month's title game.

Orange Bowl (College Football Playoff Semifinal)

#4 Oklahoma (11-1) vs #1 Clemson (13-0) - Saturday, December 31 (Miami Gardens, Florida, Sun Life Stadium)

Who will punch their ticket to the national title game? ACC champs Clemson enter with an undefeated record, but oddsmakers are still skeptical and have the Tigers as a three-and-a-half point underdog versus the surging Sooners. Oklahoma will be looking to avenge last year's embarrassing 40-6 loss to Clemson at the Russell Athletic Bowl. Both schools boast impressive offenses with Clemson's sophomore QB Deshaun Watson leading the way for his side and OU pivot Baker Mayfield handling pivot duties for the Sooners. The over/under is currently a robust 64.5.

Cotton Bowl (College Football Playoff Semifinal)

#3 Michigan State (12-1) vs. #2 Alabama (12-1) - Saturday, December 31 (Arlington, Texas, AT&T Stadium)

The winner of the Orange Bowl scores a national title showdown with one of these two single loss schools. Alabama and Michigan State powered through some tough going to hit the Cotton Bowl and Bama coach Nick Saban is once again on the cusp of national championship glory. Spartans coach Mark Dantonio will look to stomp out the dreams of the man that once hired him decades back. Michigan State will try to navigate their way through a Crimson Tide defense that gave up a paltry 14.4 points-per-game this campaign. It should be hard-hitting passionate affair. Alabama are currently a strong nine-and-a-half point favourite for the New Year's Eve clash.

Rose Bowl

#6 Stanford (11-2) vs. #5 Iowa (12-1) - Sunday, January 1 (Pasadena, California, Rose Bowl)

What could have been, eh? If Iowa hadn't have fell to Michigan State in the Big Ten Championship, they would have been in the playoff mix. Instead the Hawkeyes have a Rose Bowl matchup with a sneaky good Stanford team that has been the class of the Pac-12 this year. The big storyline heading in? Can Iowa's strong run defense put the brakes on Stanford sophomore rushing sensation Christian McCaffrey. The result will have a big impact on who emerges as the Rose Bowl champ. Stanford are favoured by six-and-a-half.

Fiesta Bowl

#8 Notre Dame (10-2) vs. #7 Ohio State (11-1) - Sunday, January 1 (Glendale, Arizona, University of Phoenix Stadium)

Their campaigns didn't wrap up how they planned, but Ohio State and Notre Dame have gifted us with a potentially marvelous Fiesta Bowl matchup. Star rusher running back Ezekiel Elliott will challenge the Fighting Irish's defensive resolve, while DeShone Kizer aims to have Notre Dame snapping up their third straight bowl game. Oddsmakers see Ohio State as a six point Fiesta Bowl favourite.

Russell Athletic Bowl

#10 North Carolina (11-2) vs. #17 Baylor (9-3) - Tuesday, December 29 (Orlando, Florida, Orlando Citrus Bowl)

Not every exciting bowl offering is plunked in the New Year's Eve/Day zone. The Tar Heels and Bears square off in Orlando for the Russell Athletic Bowl. UNC will look to prey on Baylor's injuries in this affair which has the potential to be a scoreboard busting tilt. If North Carolina (a two point underdog) wins, it will mark the first 12 win season in the school's history.
