A Quick Look At This Year's College Football Playoff Hopefuls

A Quick Look At This Year's College Football Playoff Hopefuls
Ladies and gentlemen, say hello to this year's national title hopefuls. Clemson, Alabama, Michigan State and Oklahoma are the four schools skill in the hunt for college football immortality and we're placing an early spotlight on their chances in our initial playoff preview.

#1 Clemson (13-0)

Odds To Win The National Championship: 5/1

Debate about Clemson's schedule all you like. The Tigers are the only team in this 4 way dance with an undefeated record and they've helped elevate the ACC's visibility in the process. (A 45-37 triumph over North Carolina ranks as a pretty special win.) Dabo Swinney has a lot of exciting weapons to work with in the school's late December clash with Oklahoma, including star QB DeShaun Watson and sophomore rusher Wayne Gallman. Can the school repeat the 40-6 thrashing they gave the Sooners at last year's Russell Athletic Bowl? We'll just have to wait and see.

#2 Alabama (12-1)

Odds To Win The National Championship: Even

So much for that supposedly devastating loss to Ole Miss earlier this year. Nick Saban's team has bounced back in a big way with wins over titans like Texas A&M, LSU and Florida. Their combo of punishing defense (only 14.4 points given up per game) and skilled offense has been giving opponents fits all year. In a year where the SEC showcased a number of incredible running backs, Crimson Tide tailback Derrick Henry may be top of the list thanks to his 23 TD/1986 yard campaign. There's a fair bit of faith 'Bama could win it all as they've got the most flattering odds of all four contenders and are seen as a ten point favourite to defeat Michigan State in the Cotton Bowl.

#3 Michigan State (12-1)

Odds To Win The National Championship: 7/1

Is it safe to shift Michigan State into the elite program conversation? Head coach Mark Dantonio's Spartans squad has been resilient and fearsome all season even with that close controversial L handed out by Nebraska. Michigan State can win without QB Connor Cook (see: their huge victory over defending champs Ohio State), but they should have the senior pivot completely healthy for their matchup with Alabama and that's a big deal. Much is made of Alabama's strong defense, but the Spartans are no pushovers either in that department. That statement win over Iowa in the Big 10 Championship should serve as a reminder that Michigan State are hungry to win.

#4 Oklahoma (11-1)

Odds To Win The National Championship: 9/4

What a different a year makes. The Sooners bounced back from a very underwhelming 8-5 campaign in 2014 (complete with a blowout loss to Clemson to cap things off) to morph into what some have pegged as the best team in college football today. The Sooners, a four point Orange Bowl favourite, have gotten Heisman level play out of quarterback Baker Mayfield and have been lighting teams up for 45 points-per-game. (Offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley has done wonders in his first year at OU.) Oklahoma's one hiccup this year came in a rough loss to Texas where the Longhorns kept pressure on the QB and shut down the rushing attack. Clemson has been one of the better teams at drilling quarterbacks for sacks, so it should make for an intriguing dynamic come New Year's Eve.
