Can Georgia Repeat as College Football National Champions in 2022-23?

In theory, Georgia (+500) absolutely has the juice to win a second consecutive national title. But we're far from confident that they belong near the top of this list.

Oddsmakers appear to agree. Georgia is currently laying the third-best championship chances, behind the favorite Alabama (+150) and Ohio State (+250)

This seems fair. The Bulldogs lost a lot of seniors after the 2021-22 season. They still have a top-tier recruiting class joining the fold, but they don't have the overall experience to replicate a top-ranked defense that barely allowed 10 points per game last year.

None of which is to suggest you must avoid betting on Georgia altogether. Their odds are merely right where they should be.

Should Alabama be Favored to Win It All in 2022-23?

The short answer to this question: Yes. The longer answer to this question: Heck, yes.

Alabama has little reason to worry about regressing compared to last season's performance. Indeed, they have a tough act to follow on offense, where they tallied nearly 40 points per game and torched opposing secondaries like clockwork. But that's hardly a problem when they're bringing back Heisman-winning quarterback Bryce Young and a fairly experienced receiving core. We wouldn't be shocked if they actually topple the 40-points-per-game threshold this time around.

As if that's not enough, Alabama also projects to have another Heisman candidate in returning linebacker Will Anderson. Where last year's defense cobbled together a top-18 ranking, this season's defense looks and feels like a top-10-or-better candidate.

Better NCAAF National Championship Bet: Clemson or Oklahoma?

For some reason, Clemson (+1600) and Oklahoma (+1600) always seem inextricably tied to one another in the championship discourse. Their title odds are seemingly identical or close to it every year.

That doesn't make a ton of sense to us this season, mostly because we're inclined to doubt Oklahoma. Between losing so many players, hiring a new head coach in Brent Venables and having to incorporate a transfer quarterback in Dillion Gabriel (from UCF), we can't help but think they're in for something of a transition year. Clemson becomes the play here almost by default.

Is Ohio State Still a National Championship Contender?

Truth be told, this shouldn't even be a question. It's only being asked because Ohio State dropped its first-ever conference game under head coach Ryan Day last season when they played Michigan (+3300), and some have taken that loss to mean they're somehow vulnerable.

We disagree. Ohio State is returning a huge chunk of an ascending offense. In particular, they have the speed and playmaking throughout their wide receiver rotation to cause issues for defenses across every area of the field. There's a real chance this team goes undefeated in the regular season.

2022-23 College Football National Championship Prediction

Alabama may not be the sexiest championship pick, but they're still our championship pick.

Defaulting to odds-on favorites can be boring. We get it. But good luck finding a team as collectively talented at both ends of the field as Alabama.

The way things are shaping up now, in fact, the Crimson Tide appear to have a chance at turning in a top-three offense and defense. We're not about to bet against that upside.
