How To Bet On Los Angeles Chargers
The last thing you want to feel is overwhelmed with Los Angeles Chargers betting lines. There’s a lot during the course of a season, however, all of ‘em can be distilled into one of five categories. Here’s each of the five:
Los Angeles Chargers Moneyline
The easiest and most simple way to bet on Chargers is via the moneyline. In this wager, you’re simply picking whether the Bolts win the game or its opponents. Nothing else to it, it’s really that straightforward.
Los Angeles Chargers Spread
Spreads typically draw the most wagers among all Chargers odds. You’ve probably heard the phrase, “cover the spread” and it refers to this. Spread is the handicap the Chargers play the game with. As underdogs, they must keep the final score within that margin (or sing straight up) to cover. But as favorites, LA would need to win by more than the margin to cover.
Los Angeles Chargers Over/Under
Chargers betting odds here have nothing to do with if they win, lose, and by how much. Instead, over/unders are strictly about how many points are scored — by not only the Bolts, but it's opponent too. Bookies will set a figure on the combined points and the bettor must choose over or under that number. Over/unders can be set on full games, halves, or even quarters.
Los Angeles Chargers Props
Props can be bets on a wide range of things. The over/under on touchdown passes by Justin Herbert. Whether there’s a special teams touchdown. A wager on what the margin of the win will be. Those are three examples, but the list of props is long, more so than the other four betting categories.
Los Angeles Chargers Futures
The most common futures bet would be on a potential Los Angles Chargers Super Bowl victory. Bookies set lines for all 32 teams to win the “big game.” Obviously, with so many betting options, the odds are longer (but more lucrative) across the board. Futures not only deal with Super Bowls but other end-of-the-year titles like division or conference winners.
Los Angeles Chargers Online Betting Tips
We’ll be upfront and say sports betting isn’t easy, but it sure is worthwhile if you can figure this out. Figuring it out will mostly come from trial and error, however, there are some general rules of advice to follow. Here are our favorite tips that’ll help you in your Chargers’ betting pursuits:
- Don’t judge games by common opponents: this way of thinking is faulty and unfortunately, too common amongst bettors. Say the Chargers are playing the Ravens. And before this matchup, both teams faced the Steelers. LA might’ve lost that game by 20 points, but the Ravens gutted out a two-point victory. In this scenario, most bettors would assume, well, the Ravens must be superior since they beat a team that the Chargers couldn’t hang with. Please stop this way of thinking immediately. It discounts the importance of matchups among teams. All three teams have different strengths and weaknesses, which create these mismatches. There’s zero guarantee the mismatch that caused LA to lose by 20 can be exploited by Baltimore. When making bets, compare the two teams on an independent team level, not a common opponent level.
- Keep emotions in check: if you’re reading this, there’s a chance you actually have a rooting interest in the Bolts. That’s great, but if you’re like most fans, you have biases. If you’re optimistic, you think LA is better than they really are. And of course, the opposite is true if you’re pessimistic. But the truth is likely more in the middle — unbeknownst to you. This bias can influence your decision-making and likely for the worse. Emotions can also negatively affect you after a tough betting loss. The hurt of it can “force” you into another bet for the main purpose of making up for the prior defeat. Heck, combine that emotion and your fan bias, and now you really have a 1-2 punch for bad decision-making. While you may never be able to completely rid yourself of emotions, you can at least recognize them right now and try to check them somewhat before placing a wager.
- Never bet more than 10 percent of your funds on one wager: betting isn’t just about picking winners. No, an equally-important ingredient is managing your bankroll. For instance, it would be incredibly negligent to wager a quarter of your whole fund on a bet. That’s a huge risk on your ability to keep betting in the event bad luck strikes (which is inevitable in betting). Our golden rule is to keep bets in single digits percentage-wise. This is a form of risk management that makes it harder to completely empty out your account or force you to re-deposit. Value your bets, but also value your money. Remember that.
Los Angeles Chargers History
In 2017, the Chargers moved 120 kilometers north in search of a new start in Los Angeles. It was their original home when the team first started playing in 1960, but San Diego was home from 1961 to 2016. And with that, the City of Angels now had two NFL teams, while San Diego was left with none.
The Chargers now play in a crowded sports market. Not only are the Rams there, but the city also has two MLB teams, two NBA teams, two major colleges, and so much more. The Bolts, with little connection to the city, are almost afterthoughts in Los Angeles. "Home" games for the Chargers are filled mostly with opposing fan bases. But what the franchise lost in fan pull, they made up in valuation. The team is estimated to be worth $3.9 billion, significantly more than when they were more south in San Diego.
The Chargers had a semi-successful run whilst in San Diego, which makes the exit all the more bitter. San Diego won an AFL championship in 1963, its only major title while there. However, there were also 14 division titles and 19 total playoff appearances. One of those ended in a trip to the Super Bowl back in 1994. The Chargers lost to the Steve Young-led 49ers that year in what remains the franchise's lone appearance in the "big game."
In recent memory, quarterback Phillip Rivers was the face of the franchise. Drafted in 2004, Rivers ended up replacing Drew Brees. This gave the Chargers the rare feat of having two Hall-of-Fame-level quarterbacks at the same time. Rivers eventually become the "man" and would set the record books ablaze. When Rivers retired in 2020 (after spending one season with Indianapolis), Rivers retired fifth all-time in passing yards and touchdowns. He also had a 14-year stretch of never missing a start, second-most in NFL history.
Rivers is retired and the new guy at the helm of the position is Justin Herbert, who was drafted sixth overall in the 2020 Draft. Herbert won the 2020 Rookie of the Year award, which has the fanbase thinking he might not only be able to succeed Rivers but perhaps surpass him. Only time will tell.
Los Angeles Chargers Odds To Win Super Bowl
Right now, the Chargers Super Bowl betting odds are “middle of the road” — not super great, but not terrible either. The biggest factor in whether that changes is the development of quarterback Herbert. He’s certainly flashed traits of being “elite” at times in his young NFL career, but it’ll take more consistency to put him in that tier of signal callers.
Another deciding factor is the franchise’s ability to spend. Look, Los Angeles is a high-demand market. Who doesn’t want to be young and rich in LA? But the Bolts might have to open the checkbook to lure players there, especially with the Rams also in town, who have already won a Super Bowl. Don’t forget this variable when deciding whether to bet the Bolts Super Bowl betting odds or not.
