How To Win Your Week 2 NFL Bets

By Dan Favale

New Orleans Saints (+5) vs. New York Giants (-5)

Over/Under: 53

Expect another shootout from the New Orleans Saints and New York Giants, kind of like the one we saw in The Big Easy between these two last year. And whenever a game becomes a touchdown-tossing contest, one team is liable to win big.

This, however, isn't one of those times.

Both the Giants' and Saints' defenses, while expected to be better, haven't shown worlds of improvement. Indeed, we're only one week into the season. But the Saints allowed the Oakland Raiders to put up 35 points in Week 1, all while making mistakes that were identical to last season's turnstile.

The Giants limited the Dallas Cowboys to 19 points, yet probably would have allowed more if Big D wasn't using rookie Dak Prescott under center; he led several deep, clock-killing drives that flamed out in the red zone. A veteran quarterback like Drew Brees won't see his trips down the grid iron end with as many field goals instead of touchdowns.

Hence why it's weird that the Giants are favored by five points here. Even though they're at home, they don't have the defense necessary to create measurable separation from one of the best offenses in the NFL.

Offense will a problem for either team in this one. Both squads should eclipse 25 points, and we should be in for a wild, tightly contested ending that sees the winning team carve out a victory by the skin of its teeth.

The Pick: Saints (+5)

Over/Under: Over

Detroit Lions (-6) vs. Tennessee Titans (+6)

Over/Under: 47

Another potential touchdown-tossing tilt awaits us in this one.

Neither the Detroit Lions nor Tennessee Titans sports a particular stingy defense. The Lions won a shootout agains the Indianapolis Colts in Week 1, escaping with a 35-34 victory, while the Titans fell flat on their face against the Minnesota Vikings, letting up 25 points to a squad that didn't even have Teddy Bridgewater taking snaps under center.

Tennessee's offense, which mustered just 16 points against Minnesota, should be slightly better against Detroit. The Lions don't have the combination of run and passing prevention that the Vikings do. Marcus Mariota will be allowed to drop back more, and the Titans shouldn't be as reliant on their running backs when lining up at the goal line.

Still, at the same time, Tennessee will have trouble keeping pace with Detroit. The Lions deploy an offense predicated on airing it out; the Titans, this season, are running the exact opposite kind of system. It'll be tough to match the Lions point for point when they aren't averaging as many yards per play.

Mariota may, in turn, be given the ultimate green light. We saw him get into some passing grooves as a rookie during certain games. This could be one of those contests. But the Lions are at home, and are a team that will rise above 30 points without breaking a sweat. Matthew Stafford appears smarter this season, mixing in better leadership skills, and they're doing a nice job, it seems, of varying their play-calls.

Roll with them, before this line moves in the wrong direction.

The Pick: Detroit Lions (-6)

Over/Under: Over

Seattle Seahawks (-3.5) vs. Los Angeles Rams (+3.5)

The Los Angeles Rams were shut out in their season-opener against the San Francisco 49ers. Life doesn't figure to get much better for them against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 2.

The Seahawks underachieved themselves in Week 1, putting up just 12 points against the Miami Dolphins. But quarterback Russell Wilson and Doug Baldwin proved their connection from the end of last year is real, and the Rams' defense started to show cracks at the end of 2015 that, based on Monday nights letdown versus the 49ers, appear to have carried over in 2016.

Anything less than a seven-point spread should be considered a Christamas gif here, even with the Rams at home. The Seahawks are, by all appearances, poised to win big.

The Pick: Seattle Seahawks (-3.5)
