Do the New York Giants Have Another Upset in Them vs the Washington Commanders in Week 13?

The New York Giants were the darlings of the 2022 NFL season once upon time. Indeed, linemakers never fully embraced their odds of making the NFL playoffs. But they played their way to a 6-1 record and were vying the pole position atop the NFC East. Was it possible they were a sleeping, ahem, giant?

Apparently not. The Giants have now dropped three of four games heading into their Week 13 matchup on Sunday, December 4, at 1 p.m. EST against the Washington Commanders. Their latest loss—a Thanksgiving Day letdown against the Dallas Cowboys—spotlighted all of their most fundamental flaws. This includes a lackluster offensive attack not built to move the ball consistently through the air.

aAs you can see by looking at the latest NFL online betting odds, the folks over at BetOnline are shifting New York back to underdog status accordingly:

The New York Giants are Being Written Off by the National Consensus Too Soon

It would be one thing to worry about the Giants if they were Super Bowl contenders falling to bottom-feeding teams. Neither of those things are true.

The Giants were never billed as Super Bowl contenders, not even at their peak this season. Their offense has always been light on downfield playmaking and lacking a decision-maker better than quarterback Daniel Jones Jr. More than that, we believe their past two losses are being blown out of proportion. Falling to the Detroit Lions isn't as ridiculous as it sounds. They have been frisky all year—particularly on offense. And are we really about to give the Giants a demerit for losing to the Cowboys, a team that was expected to contend for a Super Bowl themselves?

If anything, we find it encouraging that the Giants lost both games by just one possession despite not doing nearly enough on offense to put pressure on the Lions or the Cowboys. To that end, New York's defense is the real deal. They have turned in some rough stretches, most notably against the Lions and Seattle Seahawks. But they have by and large done a fantastic job of limiting passing touchdowns and big plays through the air while coming up with gritty stops in the red zone.

On the other side of this fight, we believe the Commanders have become a little overrated. Winning six of their last seven, including a game over the NFL-best Philadelphia Eagles, is absolutely great. But with the exception of that victory over the Eagles, Washington has been dispatching opponents below .500. And though their offense has shown more signs of life since changing it up at quarterback, they are far from elite. The Commanders have topped 23 points just once since Week 2, and they remain among the most turnover-prone operations in the league.

This feels like the type of matchup the Giants are hard-wired to win—a game that they will devolve into a real slugfest, and a game they won't need to score a ton of points to win.

Is the Giants vs. Commanders Point Spread Worth Betting On?

Here are the latest NFL point spread betting odds for Giants vs. Commanders in Week 13:

  • Washington Commanders, -1.5 (-114)
  • New York Giants, +1.5 (-106)

With a point spread under two points, we recommend just betting on the team you expect to win. For us, that's the Giants.

Of course, there's always the chance this does end up being a one-point affair. The Commanders and Giants have combined for more than 10 games decided by five points or fewer this season. So, we won't rule out a 21-20 battle or something along those lines.

This Giants vs. Commanders Game Could be an Ugly Watch

Below you can the latest NFL over/under betting odds for Commanders vs. Giants in Week 13:

  • Over 40.5 (-110)
  • Under 40.5 (-110)

Both the Giants and Commanders have played a bunch of games that wound up favoring the under. Together, they have hit the under in 15 of their 23 combined games. That naturally makes any under line enticing.

Then again, a 40.5-point threshold is incredibly low. Six of the past eight Giants games have included a final score of 40 points or more. The Commanders have actually had a tougher time clearing that benchmark this past half of the season.

Even so, when you think about it, we really have no choice other than to invest in the under. The Giants and Commanders both rank in the top 10 of points allowed per game while sporting two of the most lackluster passing offenses in the NFL. This could be one of those games in which neither side even notches 20 points.

OSB Prediction: Under 40.5 (-110)

Giants and Commanders To score under 40.5 points combined
-110
