NFL Football Predictions

NFL Football Predictions
The NFL season is amping up nicely. Entering Week 4, trends are developing, surprise teams are showing if they're for real and favored clubs are realizing they'd better get their act together soon or their season could slip away.

Best Week 4 Betting Lines

By Bob Duff

chiefsKansas City Chiefs (+5.5) at Pittsburgh Steelers (-5.5)

Teams in the NFL don't like going into Pittsburgh under normal circumstances. They really dread the notion when the Steelers are in a bad mood. After a lopsided loss to state rivals, the Philadelphia Eagles, the Steelers will be looking for vengeance and unfortunately for Kansas City, they'll be the chief target of that rage.

In the past two seasons, the Steelers are 8-3 against the spread when coming into a game off a loss. The already potent Pittsburgh offense will have yet another weapon at its disposal this week, as running back Le'Veon Bell returns from his three-game suspension. Meanwhile, it's questionable whether Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles will play. And it's doubtful that the Kansas City defense will pick off Ben Roethlisberger six times.

Pick: The Steelers (-5.5)

Detroit Lions (-2) at Chicago Bears (+2)

Yeah, picking the Lions is generally committing sports betting suicide most weeks but how do you not get all over the Honolulu blue and silver in this one? Despite their 1-2 start, the Lions have shown a propensity for piling up the points on offense. Detroit quarterback Matthew Stafford has plenty of receiving targets to connect with.

Meanwhile, the 0-3 Bears have displayed an inability to win at Soldier Field, where these alleged Monsters of the Midway are 1-8 straight up and 2-7 against the spread since the start of the 2015 season, the latter number being the second-worst in the NFL over that time frame. The Lions are 6-0 straight up against the Bears since 2013.

Riddled with injuries on defense, the Bears will also likely find themselves without quarterback Jay Cutler again this week.

Pick: The Lions (-2)

Buffalo Bills (-4) at New England Patriots (+4)

Betting against the Patriots is never a good idea. Betting against the Patriots when coach Bill Belichick's had 10 days to prepare a gameplan? Well, that's pure folly. While we still don't know who will be at quarterback for the Patriots - Jimmy Garoppolo (shoulder) and Jacoby Brissett (thumb) are both ailing - we also don't know who's on first, what's on second and yet I don't know how anyone in their right mind could bet against New England.

Even if they were to sign a free agent or start receiver and college QB Julian Edelman against Buffalo, odds are New England still wins. The Bills will be caught up in the euphoria of their Week Three win over Arizona, but Buffalo is 1-14 in its last 15 trips to Gillette Stadium. The Patriots are 5-0 since 2012 in games following a Thursday game and have won those five games by an average of 16 points.

Pick: The Patriots (+4)

jets Seattle Seahawks (-1.5) at New York Jets (+1.5)

Sure, it seemed like everyone in the city of Kansas City not wearing a New York Jets jersey caught a pass from Jets QB Ryan Fitzpatrick last Sunday. So you'd probably have to be an idiot to pick the Jets to beat the Seahawks, the team with the NFL's best defense this week.

OK, call me an idiot but first hear me out. Seahawks QB Russell Wilson (sprained MCL) is aiing and when he's hurting, Seattle generally fails (see Week 2 vs. Rams). West coast teams generally fair poorly on the long trip East and Seattle hasn't won at the Jets since 1983.

Pick: The Jets (+1.5)
