Now is not the time to underestimate the Bengals. They are in the Super Bowl when hardly anyone thought they'd make the NFL playoffs. And they beat the Kansas City Chiefs to get here. They are legit.
Still, it's really tough investing in an offense led by a sophomore quarterback, even one as apparently poised as Joe Burrow in Cincy. The Bengals are by and large new to these kinds of stakes, particularly on offense, and it has shown through their high-stakes victories. Without the performance of their defense, they wouldn't be in the Super Bowl.
The Rams, on the other hand, are playing like a well-oiled machine. Trading for Matthew Stafford proved to be the injection of offensive dynamism they needed to properly diversify their attack. Los Angeles finished the regular season seventh in points scored per game and boasts one of the most versatile playbooks in the game, one that includes a devastating mix of short-yardage gimmes and downfield haymakers, not to mention a steady dose of play-actions.
Stafford isn't one to wilt against talented secondaries, either. He and the Rams were able to control the pace of play and limit their mistakes in their NFC Championship victory over the San Francisco 49ers. Los Angeles is not a team that will hesitate to go right at the teeth of Cincinnati's defenses.
In the end, we're going with the more experienced squad. It's nothing personal. The Rams have simply played like the best two-way team in football for more than a month.
OSB Prediction: Los Angeles Rams (-195)
Check out the point spread betting odds for Rams vs. Bengals:
It feels a little bizarre that the Bengals are the payout favorites on the point spread. Normally, when a team is favored by fewer than five points, as the Rams are, we're inclined to predict they'll cover.
But both the Rams and Bengals have done nothing other than play in super tight games throughout the playoffs. When they've held leads, they have focused on burning the clock. And in the Bengals' case, they have relied heavily on the run, which isn't conducive to blowouts.
Furthermore, Cincinnati's defense is so stingy it ensures a 60-minute slog through four quarters. The Bengals have allowed more than 21 points just once in their past seven games, and if we expect the overall score to be low, it's reasonable to assume +4.5 is the spread that'll hit.
OSB Prediction: Cincinnati Bengals will cover at +4.5 (-115)
Here are the latest over/under betting odds for Super Bowl 56:
You can probably figure out where we're going with this: all the way toward the under.
Though the Bengals cobbled together some explosive offensive performances during the regular season, they've slowed down quite a bit in recent weeks, failing to eclipse the 30-point threshold in each of their past four contests.
The Rams, for their part, are walking 30-plus-point threats. But we believe the Bengals' defensive rise will keep them in check, much like San Francisco did during its 20-17 loss to Los Angeles in the NFC Championship game.
OSB Prediction: Rams and Bengals will combine for under 48.5 points (-110)
