Can New York City FC Repeat as Champions
Very few had New York City FC (+1000) as contenders entering the 2021 season, let alone winning the whole darn thing. Some have, by extension, posited they're a one-hit-wonder. We disagree.
New York City finished the season on a relative tear, picking up a bunch of late-game victories and ratcheting up the defense when it mattered most. With most of their core from this past year scheduled to come back for the 2022 campaign, including franchise megastar Sean Johnson, there's no need to write them off.
They're contenders, and you should consider yourself lucky to be picking them up at 10-to-odds.
Better MLS Cup Bet: LA, Seattle, or New England?
The Los Angeles Galaxy (+700), Seattle Sounders (+700), and New England Revolution (+700) are all laying identical odds as triple co-favorites. Forced to choose between the three, many will gravitate towards Seattle. They have been MLS Cup staples for a while now. Truthfully, though, their penchant for racking up penalties gives us pause.
We remain surprised, meanwhile, that the Galaxy are this high on the championship pecking order. LA didn't even make the playoffs this year and is now tasked with replacing general manager Dennis te Kloese. Their future is more unstable than advertised.
That brings us to the Revolution, who spent much of last year as the odds-on favorite to win it all. Though New England's semifinals loss was a letdown, they still have MVP Carles Gil and the inside track of coming out of the East. Take them seriously.
Is Real Salt Lake a Sleeping MLS Giant?
It is shocking that Real Salt Lake (+5000) isn't entering with better odds. Sure, there are starrier teams. But the crux of their core will be returning for 2022, and they just wrapped up a Cinderella playoff run in which they came within one victory of an MLS Cup appearance.
There remain questions about Real Salt Lake's scoring consistency. But at 50-to-1 odds, they are currently touting some of the best MLS futures value.
2022 MLS Cup Winner Prediction
In this case, we're suckers for the team that should be a solo favorite.
New England churned out one of MLS' most dangerous offenses in recent memory last season and was only intermittently gummed up during the postseason. Assuming another year of full strength from their wingers, they have the look and feel of a juggernaut.
If you're against investing in the Revolution, we suggest taking a stab-in-the-dark flier on Real Salt Lake. But New England is our pick to win it all in 2022—just like they were for most of 2021.
