Back To School: A Mountain West Conference College Football Preview

Back To School: A Mountain West Conference College Football Preview
Contrary to what you might see on SportsCenter, there's more to the Mountain West Conference than just Boise State and Fresno State. Well... kinda. Here's a look at what to expect from this perpetually overlooked conference in 2015.

What Happened Last Year?

Once again, the conference’s marquee name proved to the big fish in a mid-sized pond. Boise State thumped Fresno State 28-14 in the Mountain West title game and rolled on to score the school’s third Fiesta Bowl victory with a 38-30 dispatching of Arizona. In short, Boise State’s football club clicked well with newly installed coach Bryan Harsin. The question remains whether Boise State can build on that momentum or if Idaho’s premier football squad is destined to decline.

Who’s A Good Bet To Win It This Year

We’re bullish on Boise State’s ability to grow in a conference that isn’t too calamitous. The main issue for Boise State (a 150/1 shot to win the National Championship) is if they can reload with QB Grant Hedrick and RB Jay Ajayi out of the picture. (Brothers Cory and Kesley Young are both intriguing backfield options, as is Jeremy McNichols.) If the Broncos can sort of suitable replacements, they’re a potentially frightening team for anyone in the AP Top 25. 17 starters are back from 2014’s 12-2 team that can shift into a year with stability at head coach. This is a team not hurting for talent on either side of the ball. The offensive line is fantastic, Thomas Sperbeck can make catches and the defense boasts Tanner Vallejo, Kamalei Correa and Darian Thompson taking the field every night. One thing to keep in mind is that Boise State have not made things easy on themselves schedule wise. Schools from outside the conference have been shy to take on the Broncos, but the school’s hustled to lock down games with Washington and BYU. If Boise State can add some higher profile wins to their resume, they might be in the running for the College Football Playoff in 2016. It’s a longshot, but they’re gonna go for it.

Our Pick: Boise State

A Sleeper Team To Keep Your Eye On

We don’t imagine they’ll be slugging it out this winter with Alabama for the National Championship, but San Jose State (yes, San Jose State) could pull off some upsets in 2015. Located in the relatively “meh” West Division, the Spartans can sport the swagger of a school that has a tremendous recruiting class that includes gems like wideout Kanya Bell and CB Taeon Mason. SJSU are primed to give quarterbacks nightmares with their superb secondary and strong linebacking corps. If the team meshes with newly installed offensive coordinator Al Borges, the Spartans might make a surprising amount of noise. If nothing else, San Jose State appears primed to make life difficult for their conference rivals for years to come.

Our Pick: San Jose State
