What Does Bundesliga Mean?

Interpreted literally, Bundesliga means "Federal League." Germany and Austria use this term to distinguish the best pro leagues in the country. So, in this case, we know Bundesliga refers to the highest possible level of soccer in Germany.

What is Bundesliga?

The Bundesliga is the top-rated professional football league in Germany—and the football league with the highest average attendance per game worldwide. It was founded in 1962, debuted in 1963, is a member of the UEFA confederation, and consists of 18 teams.

Every year, the team with the most points is declared the champion for all of Germany. Meanwhile, each of the top four teams are granted entry into the group stage of the UEFA Champions League.

Usually, the Bundesliga season runs from August to May, with most matches taking place on the weekends. Teams play a total of 34 games in a season.

When Will the Bundesliga Start?

Though the 2019-20 Bundesliga season officially began on August 16, a work stoppage has delayed its schedule of events. The season typically ends sometime in May, but now, the league is only just reopening its doors on May 16 with six matches.

Bundesliga is among the first two major sports leagues to resume gameplay. Fans will not be in attendance for the duration of the season, and the remaining matches will take place in the order of the original schedule.

Best Bundesliga Championship Bets

Borussia

Bayern Munich (-600)

At -600, the price point on Bayern Munich is bound to scare some bettors away. Most prefer to go after squads with a more lucrative return.

And yet, Bayern Munich's price reflects their dominance. When the play had ceased in Bundesliga, they had racked up 28 of a possible 30 points over their previous 10 games. Their record during that stretch: 9-0-1, with eight of those nine victories coming by multiples. That's just absurd.

Currently, it's tough to imagine anyone catching them in the standings, where they sit in first place with 55 points. There's only a handful of the season left to play, and teams are trying to find their bearings after having an extended period of time off. That bodes well for Bayern Munich winning their—*checks notes*—eighth consecutive Bundesliga title.

Borussia Dortmund (+550)

If we're being honest, you can get great championship value out of anyone who isn't Bayern Munich. But two squads, in particular, are especially appealing. Borussia Dortmund is one of them.

They sit alone in second place, a mere four points behind Bayern Munich in the standings. That's not the coziest spot to be in with fewer than 10 matches left to play, but it's also not a total position of weakness.

Jadon Sancho, their winger, is among the best players in the country, and he was on an absolute tear before the league got shut down. In 23 appearances, he's logged 14 goals and 15 assists, rendering him a threat to not only create for himself but to maximize his teammates.

RB Leipzig (+800)

RB Leipzig will resume play in a position that's similar to Borussia Dortmund's spot: within striking distance of Bayern Munich. They are five points behind in the standings through 25 games, and they might actually have a better chance of bridging that gap than Borussia Dortmund.

On the season, RB Leipzig actually has the league's second-best goal differential. They also have the third-most draws. Had a few of those games gone the other way, they could be looking at a joint first-place standing with Bayern Munich.

The key for RB Leipzig, as the play begins again, is whether they have a conditioning advantage. Their players returned to work earlier than many others. They might be more prepared for the push and pull of the regular season compared to other teams.

This team will also need a little more offensive help for star Timo Werner. He ranks second in the league in goals scored, but both Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund have at least two players in the top 12. RB Leipzig's second-leading scorer, Philippe Coutinho, checks in at 14th place. Weaker secondary options are a big reason this squad's come up with so many draws that could've been victories.

Bundesliga Championship Prediction

No surprises here: We're going with Bayern Munich.

Yes, the long break in play does give us cause for pause. And it wouldn't necessarily be a bad idea to toss some money on RB Leipzig at +800. They're relatively close in the standings, and they've been practicing for longer.

Still, to pick anyone else other than Bayern Munich is a little ludicrous. They've been too dominant for too long and showed no signs of slowing before the play stoppage.
