Dodgers Biggest Favorites On Baseball Board Tuesday Behind Clayton Kershaw
Clayton Kershaw has had one of the greatest four-year runs in baseball history, winning three Cy Young Awards and four straight earned run titles, the first pitcher ever to do that. However, he already has suffered as many losses in 2015 than he did all of last year and we aren’t even to June yet. Is it time to panic for the Dodgers? They are the biggest favorites on the board in Tuesday’s action at -240 behind the lefty against Atlanta. The total of 6 on Bovada is the lowest of all the games.
Giants Own Kershaw In 2015
Last time out, Kershaw lost to the Giants and reigning World Series MVP Madison Bumgarner for the third time this season. Bumgarner even homered. Bumgarner became the first pitcher ever to homer off Kershaw (2-3). The Giants’ star connected for his seventh career home run, hitting a solo shot into the left field bleachers in the third. Kershaw allowed four runs on seven hits and two walks in 7 1/3 innings. He has a 4.32 ERA this year. Kershaw lost for the third time in 13 starts in San Francisco. He entered the game with a career 0.97 ERA at the Giants’ park.
by now. Kershaw is making hitters swing and miss at wondrous rates, even more so than last season. His 11.65 strikeouts per nine innings, 31 percent strikeout rate and 24.5 percent strikeout-to-walk ratio all ranked in the top five of major league starters. Those are the things Kershaw can control.
But stranding runners is out of a pitcher’s hands—for the most part. Unless Kershaw is striking out hitters at an elite rate once runners reach, which he did in 2014 with the second-highest rate in the majors (32.2 percent), leaving men on is reliant on factors such as defense. This season, going into Thursday’s start, Kershaw was still good (30.6 percent, fifth in the majors) but was relying more on his defense.
That led to his strand rate dipping to 65 percent, by far a career worst and light years away from his 2014 career-best 81.6. And it doesn’t help that his .349 BABIP would be the worst of his career and 29 points higher than his second-worst mark (.320 in his rookie season), according to FanGraphs.
He’s had success against Atlanta in his career though: Braves hitters are a combined .151 against him. Atlanta starts right-hander Julio Teheran (4-1, 3.91). Teheran pitched seven strong innings, striking out eight and giving up only one run on two hits and one walk, to pick up the win against the Brewers last Thursday. Teheran was perfect in all seven of his innings but one. In the fourth inning, he walked Carlos Gomez, gave up a single to Gerardo Parra, then a sac fly to Ryan Braun for his only run of the evening. It was by far Teheran’s best outing of the season. Since struggling in his final three April starts, Teheran has allowed one run or fewer in three of his past four starts. Jimmy Rollins hits Teheran well, going 7-for-22 with a homer and four RBIs.
