2020 College Football National Championship Betting Breakdown
LSU (-225) vs. Clemson (+185)
So much for our championship prediction. We initially penciled in Ohio State, only to be betrayed by their loss to Clemson in the Fiesta Bowl.
That victory is reason enough to take Clemson seriously.
Yes, LSU is the favorite. And deservedly so. But they haven’t yet faced an offense this talented.
Clemson is fourth in the nation in points scored per game this year. They average more than 26 first downs per contest on a steady mix of both run and pass plays. The 29 points they hung on Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl were actually their third-lowest of the season. Before that, they tallied at least 38 points in eight consecutive matchups.
LSU cannot expect to have the same level of defensive success against Clemson that Ohio State did. And we use the term “success” here loosely. LSU is solid defensively, but still ranks outside the top 20 in points allowed per game. They’ve proven slightly vulnerable when being attacked through the air.
On the bright side for LSU supporters, they more than make up for that deficit on the other side of the ball. No team is averaging more points per game, and they just dropped 63 on Oklahoma in the Peach Bowl. What’s more, of the 14 victories they’ve racked up en route to remaining undefeated, only two have come by fewer than two touchdowns. That’s absolutely bonkers.
National Championship Prediction
Spread bettors may find solid value in Clemson. They’re laying a +6.5, and while only one of LSU’s games have been decided by under a touchdown, they haven’t come close to facing an offense as high-powered as Clemson’s attack.
Still, beyond that, it’s tough to argue for an investment in Clemson. They deserve a ton of credit for taking down Ohio State, and they should have an easier time scoring against LSU. But neither their rushing nor passing game is a remotely even match for the No. 1 ranked team in the country.
Perhaps that’s putting it strongly. Again: We wouldn’t be surprised if this game was decided by fewer than seven points. Clemson is not undefeated on accident.
And yet, LSU enters completing more than 76 percent of their passes for nearly 400 yards per game. They wear on defenses, both with their quick routes and long-yardage plays. The 2020 national championship is theirs to lose.
OSB Prediction: LSU (-225)
