2019 NBA Playoffs

Postseason Format Breakdown

Sixteen teams make the NBA playoffs each year—more than half the league. Eight come from the Eastern Conference, and another eight come from the Western Conference. There are three rounds at the conference level, all of which are in the best-of-seven format, before the NBA Finals, which is also best of seven.
In addition to title odds, sportsbooks will let you wager on conference winners. Though the playoff seeding isn’t yet set, we’ll take you through the odds for all the remaining eligible teams in either conference

Eastern Conference Champion

Here are the odds for every team to win the Eastern Conference title. Please note that we’ve listed them in order of decreasing winning percentage, so the last included team is the least like to make the postseason:
  • Milwaukee Bucks (+190)
  • Toronto Raptors (+225)
  • Philadelphia 76ers (+255)
  • Boston Celtics (+475)
  • Indiana Pacers (+3300)

  • Golden State Warriors (-375)
  • Houston Rockets (+625)
  • Denver Nugets (+725)
  • Oklahoma City Thunder (+2000)
  • San Antonio Spurs (+2500)

NBA’s Best Title Bets

Golden State Warriors (-220)

This one’s obvious, but it needs to be mentioned. You’re not getting great value on the Warriors at -220, but their odds aren’t going to improve in your favor. For all those worried about DeMarcus Cousins‘ fit and how the defense will hold up in the postseason, the reigning champion remains head-and-shoulders better than the rest of the league.

Milwaukee Bucks (+850)

Over the course of this season, it has become increasingly clear that the biggest threat to the Warriors’ throne will come from the Eastern Conference. And it’s the Milwaukee Bucks who are spearheading this discussion.

No other team in the NBA ranks in the top five of both offensive and defensive efficiency, and they have the best player of anyone in the East: Giannis Antetokounmpo. Given their pristine floor spacing at the offensive end, along with their ability to switch almost everything defensively, they’re going to be a real problem. Their championship stock only begins to fall if Malcolm Brogdon and Nikola Mirotic remain injured for extended periods of time.

Toronto Raptors (+950)

Some are skeptical that the Raptors have a championship ceiling. They shouldn’t be. This is a team that won’t hit their stride until the postseason. They’ve dealt with plenty of injuries to their second unit during the regular season, and Kawhi Leonard, one of the NBA’s seven very best players, continues to be on a load-management schedule due to the quad injury he suffered last year.

Expect this squad to perk up in the playoffs. They’re not a given to come out of the Eastern Conference, but they deserve to be one of your two favorite picks.

Houston Rockets (+1400)

If the West is going to yield a genuine threat to the Warriors, chances are the responsibility will fall to Houston. The Rockets are not as talented on the defensive end as they were last season, but their offense is once again second in efficiency, and superstar James Harden is playing the best basketball of his career.

Denver Nuggets (+1600)

People are quick to write off the Nuggets. It doesn’t matter that they have the second-best record in the Western Conference, or that they have a top-10 player in Nikola Jokic, or that they’ve navigated a buffet of injuries to rattle off more than 50 wins. Almost everyone just seems to think they’ll fall short.

In the context of a potential match up with the Warriors, this may be true. But the game goes for just about every team. Denver has been on fire at home this season. They’re 30-6 on their own floor overall, and a whopping 24-13 against the spread, which ties them for the second-best ATS home record in the league.

Championship Prediction

And our pick to win the 2019 NBA title is…Golden State.

Look, we get there’s an absence of drama here. We really do. And if you’re looking to go against the grain, we recommend betting on the Bucks, Raptors, Rockets, Celtics or Thunder. But we cannot sit here and pretend the Warriors are not the crowning favorite.

Between Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant, Golden State has two of the NBA’s five best players. Their defense gets better when Draymond Green plays center. Klay Thompson and Andre Iguodala tend to improve their performances during the playoffs.

There’s no way around it. The Warriors’ path to a third straight title feels inevitable.

Championship pick: Golden State Warriors (-220)
