2020 NHL All-Star Game: Best Betting Odds and Predictions

2020 NHL All-Star Game: Best Betting Odds and Predictions

Everything is set for the 2020 NHL All-Star Weekend: the rosters, the matchup, everything. Unlike most other sports, this is not a single-game affair. Instead, the NHL hosts a single elimination 3-on-3 tournament, with one representative from each of the four divisions. It takes two victories to win the entire weekend. Let’s find out which All-Star squad you should bet on.

2020 NHL All-Star Weekend Betting Breakdown

Before we get to the specific squads, it’s important to take stock of the NHL’s All-Star format.

Beginning in 2016, the league switched to a two-day, four-team single-elimination tournament. Each of the NHL’s four divisions has a squad in play. Every game is 20 minutes long and played 3-on-3, with a goalie on either side.

On Day 1 of the tournament, the Pacific Division All-Stars face off against the Central Division All-Stars and then the Atlanta Division All-Stars go up against the Metropolitan Division All-Stars. The winners from each contest will then square off in a winner-take-all finals matchup on Day 2.

Let’s roll through every team’s odds of winning the entire tournament.

Pacific Division (+250)

Like they did last year, the Pacific Division squad enters as the slight favorite. It’s pretty easy to see why.

Team captain Connor McDavid of the Edmonton Oilers leads the entire NHL in total points this season. The wing depth on the rest of the roster is spotty, but he’s joined by fellow Oilers teammate Leon Draisaitl. Between the two of them, this team is built to score in a 3-on-3 setting.

Atlantic Division (+275)

Led by Boston Bruins right wing Dave Pastrnak, it isn’t all that hard to like what the Atlantic Division has to offer. What they lack in the raw scoring punch, they make up for with passing ability and overall defense.

Still, the absence of Brad Marchand, another Boston Bruin, is pretty glaring. He is sixth in the NHL in total points scored and built to play this kind of game. We’d like the Atlantic Division’s chances much more if he were on the docket.

Central Division (+350)

Not so fun fact: The division that includes the All-Star host team has yet to win this fairly young tournament. Ergo, history is working against the Central Division.

On the bright side, their case isn’t hopeless. They’re led by Nathan McKinnon of the Colorado Avalanche, who’s one of the most well-balanced offensive players in the league. If they can get the best stuff from Patrick Kane of the Chicago Blackhawks and Ryan O’Reilly of the host city St. Louis Blues, they’ll be in tip-top shape.

Metropolitan Division (+500)

Long shot odds are always tempting in All-Star Games, given that it’s often harder to predict which teams will be playing at their very best. But the Metropolitan Division’s line is an exception.

Could they win? Sure. Will they? Most likely not. One of their premier mainstays, Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins, wasn’t even elected into the game because he’s battling injuries. Captain Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals, meanwhile, plans to skip the festivities for a second-straight year.

NHL All-Star Game Prediction

And our pick to win the 2020 NHL All-Star tournament is…the Central Division.

Yes, we’re going there. It doesn’t matter that the team with the host city on its roster has never won. We don’t care.

The reigning Stanley Cup champion St. Louis Blues are the best host the NHL has had under this current format, and they’re sending three players to the tournament. Coupled with the fact that their wings are some of the best two-way skaters in the game, we’re comfortable taking this chance—particularly when neither the Atlantic Division nor Metropolitan Division will be putting their best possible roster on the ice.

OSB Prediction: Central Division (+350)
