With very few people predicting a Rams-Patriots Super Bowl, the outcome of this game has remained in flux since it was made official.
Los Angeles initially opened up as one- to 1.5-point favorites. That changed rather quickly, with the Patriots jumping to three-point heavyweights by the close of Monday. This should shock absolutely no one.
While New England isn’t exactly at the height of its powers, there is a been-here, done-that feel to the way they carry themselves. Their win over the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship was perfect proof. They entered with a 3-5 record on the road for the season, with a minus-19 point differential. Facing off against the NFL’s top offense in the Chiefs, oddsmakers listed them as underdogs.
It didn’t matter. The Patriots took care of business—all while Tom Brady was far from at the top of his game.
Yes, Brady threw for over 300 yards. But he also tossed just one touchdown while coughing up two interceptions. It was the ground game that carried the Patriots in the red zone. Running backs Sony Michael and Rex Burkhead rattled off two touchdowns apiece.
That should terrify you if you’re a Rams supporter, because Los Angeles is far more forgiving than Kansas City when it comes to defending the pass. Indeed, the Rams are third in total interceptions, but the secondary is 22nd in net yards allowed per passing attempt and 25th in total touchdowns relinquished through the air.
There’s a reason Brady enters as the MVP favorite after turning in a letdown by his own standards. Los Angeles’ coverage in the secondary is that inviting.
This isn’t to say the Rams will be pushovers. They shouldn’t be. Quarterback Jason Goff has made plenty of improvements, and running back Todd Gurley is an offense unto himself. Los Angeles has the tools to hang in a shootout.
Still, that’s not saying much. It’d be different if the Rams could counteract their shoddy passing defense with strong run prevention. They can’t. They’re 10th in rushing touchdowns allowed, but dead last in net yards surrendered per rushing attempt.
The Patriots should have no trouble mixing it up against the Rams’ defense, which will, in the end, make for a high-scoring victory—the sixth Super Bowl win of the Brady and Bill Belichick era.
