World Series Odds: Red Sox (-155) vs. Dodgers (+125)

These odds do not properly reflect the should-be closeness of this battle.

If you remember, in fact, it was the Dodgers who opened up with better preseason World Series odds. They were initially laying a +500 compared to the Red Sox’s +120. But Boston’s offense has people scrambling—and rightly so.

During a season in which the New York Yankees essentially blasted through every home-run record imaginable,  the Red Sox led all MLB teams in slugging percentage. They also paced the league in most catch-all offensive metrics, including OPS+, which weighs both slugging and on-base percentage.

Mix in that the Red Sox have also rolled through the Yankees and last year’s World Series champion Houston Astros, and it’s tough to find too many reasons to pick against them. They’re on fire at the moment.

World Series X-Factor: Pitching

If there’s one area in which the Dodgers have a decided edge entering Game 1, it’s in the pitching department. They rank second in both WHIP and home-run prevention, trailing only the eliminated Astros. They don’t allow their starters to go deep into games, but they don’t need to. Their bullpen is pristine.

Then again, the Red Sox’s own pitching staff is a little underrated. They are currently third overall in adjusted earned average, well ahead of the Dodgers, who place seventh in that same category.

That type of balance is terrifying if your a Dodgers supporter. Los Angeles’ offense might be underestimated; the advanced stats say it is. But the Red Sox are on a whole other offensive plain, with a strong defense to back it up to boot.

2018 World Series Prediction

This decision is harder than Boston’s heavy-favorite status suggests. Los Angeles is a real threat to pull this series out and complete the upset.

At the same time, it’s very hard to bet against the Red Sox. Even if you believe the Dodgers will keep their offense in check, it’s going to take every ounce of their pitching staff to get it done. Starters Clayton Kershaw and Alex Wood specifically will be worked tooth and nail, and more importantly, Los Angeles will need to burn through its bullpen.

Fatigue is an ever-present danger this time of year, with teams so deep into the season. The longer the series lasts, the more likely Boston is to win. And when they also have the offensive firepower to end the best-of-seven clash in four or five, we cannot reasonably pick against them.

Prediction: Red Sox over Dodgers in seven
