With the Pittsburgh Penguins holding steady atop the Metropolitan, the Flyers are battling with the New York Rangers for the number-two spot in the standings. Coming into this afternoon’s game off a win on Saturday, the Flyers will look to sweep this home-and-home with the Islanders. Their win over New York came at a 6-4 clip in Philadelphia. The Flyers looked a little shaky early in the contest, but were able to fend off the Islanders and record their 25th win of the season. With 55 points, the Flyers are 10 points ahead of the Islanders in the standings.

New York Islanders: Trying to climb out of the basement

Sitting at the bottom of the Metropolitan standings with 45 points, the Islanders are just a couple of wins from climbing out of the cellar. They have an overall record of 19-24-7 and are just 7-9-7 at home. New York has been outscored by its opponents by a total of 25 goals this season. Despite their 6-4 loss to the Flyers in Philadelphia this weekend, they have played to a 7-3-0 record in their last 10 games to improve their point total. The disappointing aspect of this run is that they have lost two of their last three games after winning seven of eight games. Against their division opponents, the Islanders are just 3-11-3 this season.

On Monday afternoon, the Flyers and the Islanders will complete a home-and-home series in Uniondale during an afternoon game. These two Metropolitan teams do not like each other, but the rivalry isn’t what it once was. As the Flyers look to finish the sweep with a win on Monday, the Islanders will attempt to get back into the win column.
