Washington looks to improve on mediocre MLB first half

As is evident by their 41-40 record, the Washington Nationals have been huge under-achievers during the first half of the 2013 MLB season. Touted as top chalk to win the 2013 MLB World Series Championship back in the preseason, the DC Crew has a lot of work ahead – just to make the MLB playoffs. Scoring has been a major problem for the Nationals during the first half as they sit 29th in the Majors with just 295 runs scored. Washington appears to be turning the corner in that regard as they have averaged 4.57 runs per game over their past eleven match-ups – including six contests where they scored five or more runs. Sitting 6.5 games behind the Atlanta Braves in the National League East, and 4.5 games out of a Wild Card race, a four game sweep of the Brewers would be a perfect start to a solid second half playoff push by the Nationals.

Nationals send their pitching ace to the bump to deal to the Brew Crew

Although it’s encouraging to see that Washington is starting to score some runs, the Nats bashed the New York Mets 13-2 yesterday afternoon, the major key to this contest is ace RHP Jordan Zimmerman heading to the hill for the Nationals tonight. A very solid candidate for the 2013 NL Cy Young award, Zimmerman (11-3 ERA 2.28) has been lights for Washington as he has allowed just 29 earned runs over 114.2 inning pitched. Milwaukee sends their hottest hand to the bump tonight. RHP Yovani Gallardo posted a solid 2.32 ERA during June including a 1.59 ERA in his last three starts. Scoring (3.96 RPG) has also been an issue for the Brewers as they sit 21st overall. The Brew Crew (32-48) are 18.5 games out of first in the NL and were just swept by the red hot Pittsburgh Pirates. They closed June with a 1-7 run and were outscored by a 36-24 count.
