2022 WNBA Season Preview

As we preview the 2022 WNBA season, we need to mention one important factoid: this will be the longest regular season in league history. Thirty-six games will make up the season — which is a step-up from 32 in 2021. It will stretch until mid-August when the playoffs begin.

Speaking of which, the postseason WILL end before the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup. That’s scheduled to begin in September down in Australia. Here are a few other important dates in the WNBA season worth marking your calendar for now:

  • Friday, May 16 — Season Opener (including defending champion Chicago vs. Los Angeles)
  • Sunday, July 10 — WNBA All-Star game
  • Tuesday, July 26 — Commissioner's Cup championship game

Another thing worth pointing out about the 2022 campaign is it could be the last hoorah for a trio of league legends — Sue Bird, Sylvia Fowles, and Diana Taurasi. Only Fowles has said for sure 2022 is her swan song, but there’s rampant speculation Bird and Taurasi could join her on the retirement list. The latter two, along with Candace Parker, are the league's most recognizable players so they’re not small losses (if it indeed happens).

2022 WNBA Championship Betting Advice

No matter the sport, whipping up a winning betting strategy is not just about the picks made — but also the picks NOT made. That’s why we wanted to create a do’s and don’ts list of sorts for our 2022 WNBA championship betting strategy. Below you’ll find the prominent WNBA teams that fall into each group:

Do Bet Connecticut Sun

Simply put, the Sun have the best “big three” of anyone, which include Jonquel Jones, Alyssa Thomas, and DeWanna. Connecticut’s issue for years has been keeping all three healthy at the same time. We can’t predict whether 2022 is finally the year that happens or not, but there’s zero denying the super team-like power of the trio together. The Suns have been consistent contenders as of late, but haven’t had that breakthrough moment quite yet. But we’re betting 2022 is finally different and they take care of business behind their highly talented roster.

Don’t Bet Phoenix Mercury

The popular betting choice will undoubtedly be to bet on Taurasi to lead the Mercury to WNBA supremacy then retire on top — a la Michael Jordan (well, in his second of three retirements). Like Jordan, Taurasi is widely considered the women’s league G.O.A.T. She’s the league's career leader in points, field goals made, and three-point field goals made, but more importantly, has spurred the Mercury to three championships.

But unfortunately for Phoenix, there’s a less hopeful story hanging over them this season that doesn’t involve Taurasi. Of course, we’re talking about Brittney Griner’s detainment in a Russian prison cell. She’s been imprisoned for two months now and there’s not much optimism that she’ll be back anytime soon. It’s a terribly sad story off-the-court but on the court, it certainly won’t help the Mercury’s cause given her impact on the floor. We hate to do it, but Phoenix is pure betting fade material in 2022.

Do Bet Chicago Sky

The reigning champions are heavy on veterans. Some might say too heavy, but we’re of the belief it’ll end up paying dividends — as in a potential repeat title. The Sky possess not one, not two, but three Finals MVPs on their roster — Kahleah Copper (2021 MVP), Candace Parker (2016), and the newly-signed Emma Meesseman (2019). Like they did in the playoffs a year ago, don’t be surprised if Chicago “flips the switch” when it matters. They have ample veteran talent that’s capable of doing just that.

Don’t Bet Las Vegas Aces

We’re actually surprised the Aces have the second-best odds at winning the WNBA title at +375. Yes, they had the second-best record in the league a year ago. Yes, they have A’ja Wilson, one of the premier players in the WNBA. But there’s been too much roster and front-office turnover during the offseason to justify a bet on them. Las Vegas will be without its 2021 head coach, general manager, and second-best player in Liz Cambage. Consequently, the Aces have high bust potential due to all the changes.
