It didn’t take the Sabres long to get good. Joining the NHL as an expansion franchise in 1970, they were in the playoffs by the 1972-73 season and in the Stanley Cup final in 1974-75, losing in six games to Philadelphia. Their only other Cup final appearance was also a six-game setback to the Dallas Stars in 1998-99.
