The Flames played second fiddle to the powerhouse Edmonton Oilers for most of the 1980s. Calgary got the better of the Oilers in 1986 but lost the Stanley Cup final to Montreal. Three years later, the Habs and Flames met again and this time, it was Calgary who emerged victorious. The Flames have been back to the final just once since, losing to Tampa Bay in 2004.
