The early rounds will be played in Charlotte, Fort Worth, Louisville, Minneapolis, Omaha, Pittsburgh, Sacramento, and Spokane, while the Sweet 16 and Elite Eight move to San Antonio, Los Angeles, Kansas City, and New York. Detroit is the sole host for the tourney’s final three games.
As we said, this whole March Madness schedule (and the locations) are 100-percent official. No, there’s no breathing room, but that’s what makes this tourney especially fun. This is dialed up a notch if you're college basketball betting on it.
How The March Madness Tournament Format Works
That’s right, the NCAA Tournament is no longer a 68-team field. No, no, it’s now 76 teams. This marks the first expansion of the tourney since 2011. Naturally, you’re probably thinking, “how’s this thing going to work now?”
It’s actually pretty straightforward. The expansion is reserved for what used to be the First Four round. If you remember, this is where 8 teams played for the final four spots in the 64-team field. Welp, that’s now going to be 24 teams playing in what they’re calling the Opening Round. The 12 “survivors” get into the field of 64.
After that? It’s the March Madness schedule you know and love — six rounds of win-or-go-home basketball until one team is left standing.
But let’s backtrack even more, all the way back to how those 76 teams even end up there since there are hundreds of college basketball programs in the country. For one, conference tournament winners are automatically entered — from the powerhouse conferences (SEC, Big Ten) to the smaller ones (WAC, Patriot League).
Everyone else earns at-large bids to play, and that’s where the NCAA Division I basketball committee earn their keep. The committee pours over each team’s resume — win-loss record, strength of schedule, Kenpom ratings, etc. — to not just pick who goes “dancing”, but also how they’re seeded (each region is seeded 1 through 16).
A one seed means you’re the best-ranked team in that region, and on paper, have the “easiest” path to the regional final (Elite 8). Of course, March Madness has a funny way of making a mockery of those high seeds. Every year, we usually see top-seeded teams go down way earlier than anyone expected. Those are called “bracket busters.”

The new Opening Round is made for bettors who actually follow the sport beyond the blueblood programs. That’s because realistically, most of the 24 teams playing here will be lower-seeded teams from smaller conferences you maybe never heard of.
That creates a simple advantage: know the teams nobody else bothered watching. Even if you didn’t watch them during the regular season, you can get a feel for a team through deep research — things like conference strength, schedule quality, recent performance, and so on. These things will give you a great gauge for teams, trust us.
This is where March Madness earns its nickname. Games are everywhere, mismatches are inevitable, and spreads can get enormous.
Be careful automatically betting with the powerhouse programs, though. A No. 2 seed might dominate a No. 15… but not enough to cover a whopping 23.5-point spread. Conversely, an underdog doesn’t need to pull off a historic upset to cash — it merely needs to keep the game close enough to pay out its bettors.
Again, research is the name of the game here. Beyond looking at the matchups, analyze where the games are being played. Sacramento is an early host this year. If Stanford were to be drawn to compete there, that essentially guarantees them a home game since the campus is so close to Sacramento.
Location also determines how long a team has to travel. We shouldn’t have to tell you, traveling farther is more of a disadvantage than a short trip over. Don’t overlook scheduling, especially early on.
By the second weekend, the weak links have mostly been weeded out (especially in the NIL era where Cinderella teams are harder to come by). Still, forget obsessing over the rank next to a team’s name and start obsessing over game matchups.
Can a small team survive against an elite rebounding squad? Can a favorite defend the three against a team launching 30 of them per game? Does an up-tempo offense run into an opponent capable of dragging games into the mud?
These are all examples of the questions you should be asking yourself throughout the tourney, but especially here where talent levels get strikingly close across matchups.
Prep matters all tourney long, but more so in the Final Four. That’s because instead of the rapid turnarounds from earlier rounds, coaches get almost a full week to obsess over one opponent.
We’d put extra weight on coaching here when betting. Give an elite coach five or six days to find the holes in an opponent instead of 48 hours, and that’s a legitimate “edge.”
Then — boom — all that preparation time disappears. The semifinal winners play Saturday and have to turn around for the National Championship on Monday.
But once you get to the finale, you’re getting the two best teams in the nation. The betting matchup is as close as it gets here so it’s on you to find the tiniest of details that might make a difference.

You don’t have to wait for Selection Sunday to start betting March Madness. Futures odds are available way, way before the bracket is finalized. March Madness futures allow you to bet on far-out outcomes like who will win the national championship or earn a No. 1 seed, for example.
Once Selection Sunday happens and the bracket is set, that’s when you’ll see individual game lines on the opening tourney matchups. Due to the sheer popularity of the tourney, you’ll have your pick at dozens and dozens of bet types here — moneylines, spreads, point totals, and March Madness prop bets.
But just be aware that March Madness odds can and usually do move fast. A team might open as a 4-point favorite Sunday night and be sitting at -5.5 the next morning. Sportsbooks adjust odds based on several factors, including injuries and how much money is being garnered. If one side is drawing a lot of betting action, bookies will adjust to try to get more balanced activity on both sides.
That’s why we personally recommend not betting the second a new line appears. Sure, you might get lucky and bet before an injury hurts the winning chances of the team you didn’t take. But… that’s a complete guessing game. We much prefer waiting til the end when all information is at your disposal.
