When Iceland finished second in Group A of the 2016 European Championships qualifying campaign, they guaranteed their first-ever appearance in a major soccer tournament. The Icelandic under-21 team has been receiving glowing reviews over the past few years, and many of its players now find themselves in the full national team. Iceland’s qualifying campaign pitted them against Czech Republic, Turkey, and Netherlands, and it was those three sides who were expected to be heading to France this summer.  [+]

However, Netherlands were bitterly disappointing – Iceland beat them home and away – and failed to qualify. Iceland also put three goals past Turkey, a Turkish side that only let in nine goals in total during qualification.

Mixed in with the relative unknown players of the Iceland squad are stars such as Swansea City’s Gylfi Sigurdsson who is a set-piece specialist with 12 international goals from 32 appearances.

Aron Gunnarsson of Cardiff City is vastly experienced in the middle of the field, while youngster Arnor Ingvi Traustason is an exciting prospect and one who has scored three goals in his first six internationals.

Up front, Iceland have the Nantes striker Kolbeinn Sigborsson who scored 31 goals in 80 games for Ajax earlier in his career, while Eidur Gudjohnsen needs no introduction, although he is 37-years-old now and may have to make do with a bit-part role at Euro 2016.

Iceland Online Betting Tips

If you believe that Iceland can do the unthinkable and win Euro 2016, you will find odds of around +10000 on that happening. While unlikely, remember that Greece won Euro 2004 from a similar position, so stranger things have happened in soccer.

Iceland are -165 to qualify from the group, mostly because they could finish as one of the best third place finishers, but the +120 on them not qualifying seems like the safest bet to make.
