France go into their quarter-final clash with Iceland as overwhelming -227 favorites compared to the +900 of Iceland, showing how one-sided online sports betting sites expect this fixture to be.
On paper, France should roll Iceland over with ease, but as Iceland have shown in their win over England in the Round of 16, soccer does not always work like that.
The French have looked solid without being spectacular, getting the job done in each of their Euro 2016 games so far. They had to come from behind to beat Republic of Ireland in the Round of 16, which showed the squad has good character about them.
France are without Adil Rami and N’Golo Kante for the Iceland clash after both picked up their second yellow cards of the tournament, while exciting 20-year-old Kingsley Coman is doubtful after taking a knock.
Antoine Griezmann is the tournament’s joint top scorer with three goals to date, and he is +400 to score first against Iceland, and +170 to score at any time. Strike partner Olivier Giroud is +350 to open the scoring and +140 to find the back of the net at any point.
Iceland, as a country, may only have a population of around 330,000 inhabitants, yet they are pulling up trees in this tournament.
Their commitment to winning, and their unrivalled team spirit has seen them not only progress from the group stages with draws against Portugal and Hungary, and a win over Austria, but they also beat England 2-1 in the Round of 16 to send the Three Lions home.
That game against England typified the Icelandic team spirit. While they have no global superstars on their books, they were the first to every loose ball, defended as a unit, and attacked with pace and finesse.
While it is unlikely that betting the +900 on an Iceland win will yield any profit, you can bet your bottom dollar that Iceland will make it as difficult as possible for the French, meaning the +360 on the game being level after 90-minutes does have some value.
If you fancy Iceland to score first, the shortest price of their players is Kolbeinn Sigthorsson at +1100 with him +350 to score at any point.
That said, a 2-0 France win is available at +480 while the France/France double result at +110 is also a good bet considering Iceland have only kept one clean sheet in their past 10 games.
