Horse Racing Betting News This Month | Breeders' Cup Futures, Haskell Field Set & Market Watch | July, 2026

The 2026 Breeders’ Cup World Championship races are still more than three months away, but you could say the Breeders’ Cup Classic is already taking on greater Magnitude.

Magnitude is the +400 betting favorite in the Breeders’ Cup Classic future book odds. The four-year-old racehorse is three-for-three in 2026, with a bankroll of more than $8.3 million.

Sovereignty, the 2025 Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes winner, is the +600 second betting choice. Defending Breeders’ Cup Classic champion Forever Young (+650) and Metropolitan Stakes winner Nysos (+700) are the only other horses with betting lines shorter than +1000.

Golden Tempo, the winner of this year’s Kentucky Derby and Preakness, is given a betting line of +1200. Journalism, Sovereignty’s main Triple Crown rival last year and the winner of the 2025 Preakness Stakes, is also assigned odds of +1200.

Napoleon Solo, winner of this year’s Preakness, is at a betting line of +1600.

The 2026 Breeders’ Cup World Championships will take place on Friday. October 30 and Saturday, October 31. The event will be held at the Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Kentucky.

Key market storylines driving futures odds

In upcoming stakes races, July brings us the Haskell Stakes. August provides the Travers Stakes and the King’s Plate, the first leg of Canada’s Triple Crown.

June has already delivered a major shift in horse racing betting markets. The Belmont Stakes is now in the books, with Golden Tempo adding the final leg of the Triple Crown series to his earlier Kentucky Derby win. That result changes the summer three-year-old picture and gives bettors a new angle for Breeders’ Cup Classic futures.

Below, we break down the latest horse racing betting storylines, including Belmont Stakes results, Haskell Stakes futures, Breeders’ Cup market movement, and the summer races bettors should be watching next. Struggles for Journalism

Japanese horse ready to defend title

With his emphatic win in the June 27 Stephen Foster Stakes at Churchill Downs, Magnitude reclaimed top spot in the NTRA rankings. The Steve Asmussen-trained colt beat both 2025 horse of the year Sovereignty and Grade 1 stakes winner Baez to the wire for that victory. Magnitude has eight wins from 14 career starts. This win came in his first start since Magnitude’s wire-to-wire victory in the March 28 Dubai World Cup. Magnitude also had a win last year in the Clark Stakes.

The Eclipse Award winner as the 2025 horse of the year, Sovereignty’s four-year-old campaign is off to an ordinary start. The horse was second in the Oaklawn Handicap at Oaklawn Park. He was then third to Magnitude in the Stephen Foster Stakes. As a three-year-old, Sovereignty won six of 11 starts. The trainee of William Mott was the first horse since 1995 to win the Kentucky Derby, Belmont Stakes, and Travers Stakes in the same year.

Golden Tempo has changed the summer futures picture. The Kentucky Derby winner came back to win the Belmont Stakes at Saratoga, confirming his place as one of the leading three-year-olds in the country. That result should make him a major name in early Breeders’ Cup Classic discussions. Golden Tempo's trainer, Cherie DeVaux, was opting to keep her horse out of the July 1 Jim Dandy Stakes. They are also skipping the July 18 Hasnell Stakes. Golden Tempo is slated to be back on the track for the August 29 Travers Stakes at Saratoga to see if he can complete the same feat as Sovereignty did last year.
Fourth in last year's Breeders' Cup Classic, Journalism is also off to a slow start in his four-year-old season. The Michael McCarthy trainee was third in the Metropolitan Stakes and third in the Oaklawn Stakes. Journalism is listed as a possible starter in the July 18 Grade 2 San Diego Handicap and the August 22 Grade 1 Pacific Classic. Along with his win in the Preakness last year, Journalism also won the Haskell Stakes, Santa Anita Derby, San Felipe Stakes, and the Los Alamitos Futurity.
Forever Young, the Japanese horse that won last year's Breeders' Cup Classic, is living up to his name. The horse is showing no signs of slowing down in his five-year-old season. Forever Young was second to Magnitude in the Dubai World Cup. Previously, he defended his title in the Saudi Gold Cup, the first horse ever to do that in the history of the race. As a three-year-old, Forever Young was third in the Breeders' Cup Classic and in the Kentucky Derby.

Belmont Stakes results reshape horse racing futures

The Belmont Stakes is now in the books, which means this section should no longer focus on pre-race props or exacta markets. Golden Tempo confirmed his Kentucky Derby form by winning the Belmont Stakes at Saratoga, making him one of the most important names in the summer horse racing futures picture.

For bettors, the biggest takeaway is that Golden Tempo has strengthened his Breeders’ Cup Classic case. Pre-race doubts about whether his Kentucky Derby win was pace-dependent have now been answered with another major victory. It appears that the next step for Golden Tempo will be a start in the August 29 Travers on his route toward the Breeders’ Cup Classic.

Renegade remains part of the futures conversation, but his market position has changed. He entered Belmont week as one of the leading betting names, but Golden Tempo’s win means Renegade now needs a strong summer response to rebuild confidence with bettors. Renegade is currently set with odds of +1600 in Breeders' Cup Classic futures.

Napoleon Solo heads field for Haskell Stakes

Up next on the major stakes race calendar, the $1 million Grade 1 Haskell Stakes at Monmouth Park is being outfitted with an intriguing field. Raced at a distance of 1 1/8-miles on Monmouth Park's dirt surface, this event is solely for three-year-olds. The Haskell serves as a "Win, and You're In" event for the Breeders' Cup Classic.

Certainly, the most intriguing name is Preakness Stakes winner Napoleon Solo (+400). The Chad Summers-trained colt skipped the Belmont following his exciting victory in the Preakness Stakes.

Set alongside Napoleon Solo at +1600 odds in the Breeders' Cup Classic futures, the Bob Baffert-trained Crude Velocity (+450) is another horse to watch in this race. Baffert will be seeking his 10th Haskell victory with the horse that finished second in the Woody Stephens Stakes.

Set as the local hopeful is Baby Vino (+1000). The Lindsay Schultz-trained horse recently won the NYRA Bets Pegasus Stakes, the primary Haskell prep, by an impressive 10 3/4 lengths.

Further Ado (+300), winner of the Grade 1 Blue Grass Stakes, is the current favorite in the Haskell odds. This horse is +2000 in the Breeders' Cup Classic future book. Trainer Brad Cox is a two-time Haskell winner.
