Oklahoma doesn’t have a huge sports market, but they are home to some prestigious college football programs and a mediocre NBA team that doesn’t really draw in the action that other states do.

Oklahoma Sports Betting Timeline
We take a brief look at what has happened over the years in terms of sports betting in the state of Oklahoma.
Legalization of Sports Betting In Oklahoma
While they aren’t heavily sports-focused, they will surprise you as they are very open to sports betting and hope to have it legalized in the next year or two. Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt wants to allow sports betting in two tribal casinos owned by the Otoe-Missouria Tribe and Comanche Nation through renegotiated compacts.
He signed these new compacts in April 2020, though there is huge controversy surrounding it. Currently, legal forms of gambling in Oklahoma are limited exclusively to tribal casinos, which are abundant in the state – 102 casinos, predominantly owned by 30 different tribes and generate over $4 billion in revenue per year.
Tribal Betting Rights and the Situation Up til Now
Giving two tribes exclusive sports betting rights left at least ten other tribes angered, and they have filed a legal dispute with the Governor. With COVID-19 shutting down all casinos in the state since March 2020, many casinos are hurting for revenue streams, and feel that special treatment was given to the two tribes who renegotiated their compacts.
Many think what Governor Stitt did was illegal, and that he overstepped as he doesn’t have the authority to permit sports betting in any casino.
Now in 2021, just over a year after the announcement of federally recognized tribes offering sports betting markets, there is a lot of casinos popping up in Oklahoma. Choctaw casinos are readily available to citizens, the move has breathed life back into the state.
Lots of talking but still no law
With so many interest groups in Oklahoma, it makes sense that democracy will take some time. The debates are raging in the statehouse, but there seems to be little progress overall. While the state government is not hopping on the train to start collecting this tax revenue, this has little effect on Oklahoma sports bettors. Even if Oklahoma is not legalizing sportsbooks, bettors in Oklahoma can still sign up with and the online sportsbooks we recommend here.
Can I bet on Sports in Oklahoma?
Not yet, but really we aren’t sure what to make of this mess Governor Stitt got himself into. Any sports betting in Oklahoma will be held up with these legal disputes, so for now, sports betting is still illegal in the state of Oklahoma.
However, you may not be able to go to a tribal casino to bet on sports but you definitely can bet online! Online sportsbooks are becoming increasingly more popular, and there are so many to choose from, you’ll definitely find one that peaks your interest.
Signing up at an online sportsbook is fast and easy, and you don’t have to worry about leaving the house or in this case, leaving the state to go bet on sports.
Betting on Oklahoma Sports Teams
NBA
Betting on the Oklahoma City Thunder
The only professional league team in the state is the Oklahoma City Thunder in the NBA. They’ve been around for roughly 50 seasons and have yet to win a championship. They can make it to the playoffs usually, and maybe even to an NBA Final, but they can’t seal the deal and win a championship.
Their hopes were dashed in 2016 when star player Kevin Durant left and joined the Warriors, followed by departures from Russell Westbrook and Paul George, it doesn’t look like the Thunder will see a championship unless they acquire a little more star power.
The Oklahoma State Sooners are probably the most prominent team in the state, and for good reason. The Sooners’ college football program is a force to be reckoned with, making it to Bowl games for the past 20 years, since Bob Stoops took over.
Oklahoma Casinos
There are over one hundred tribal casinos in the state of Oklahoma, owned by 30 different Native American tribes. Under the current compacts, only two have been renegotiated, and have included sports betting in their offerings. The following tribes could offer sports betting if the tribal compact renegotiation is approved and the two tribes are allowed to offer sports betting:
