Caleb Williams The Deserving Frontrunner to Repeat

A black and white image of a statue depicting a football player in a running pose evokes thoughts of Heisman Trophy futures. The player is bent forward, with one arm extended in front as if blocking, and the other arm bent at his side holding a football. The background is plain and unadorned.

The 2023 College Football season is now just around the corner, which means it's the perfect time to look at the Online college football betting odds in more ways than one. While betting on the national champion is quite popular, so is the Heisman Trophy futures. This award is the most prestigious individual accolade in the sport and recognizes the best player in the nation, which is usually a quarterback, although running backs and wide receivers have won it in the past. By no surprise, reigning winner Caleb Williams of USC is the favorite at +500 odds to repeat, with a plethora of quarterbacks rounding out the top five. Jayden Daniels sits at +900, while Quinn Ewers (+1000), Cade Klubnik (+1000), and Jordan Travis (+1400) are expected to be in the mix, too.

Before we get into the odds and analysis as to who could take home the Heisman, make sure to check out our reviews of the top online sportsbooks.

Caleb Williams (+500)

Who else would be the frontrunner? Caleb Williams set the college football scene on fire last season, leading the Trojans to the Pac-12 title game. While they did fall short of making the CFP, Williams was unreal. He threw for 4,537 yards and 42 touchdowns against a mere five interceptions. His completion rate sat at 66.6% and Williams also wreaked havoc with his legs, collecting 10 rushing scores, too. We have to remember that the projected No. 1 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft beat out Bryce Young, Max Duggan, Stetson Bennett, and CJ Stroud for the award last year. Sure, this is a talented group of QBs across the nation again, but Williams could win it again. Perhaps he'll put up even bigger numbers.

Jayden Daniels (+900)

Jayden Daniels transferred to LSU in early 2022 but had some injury problems in his first season with the Tigers. Regardless, he still played pretty well, going 10-4 in 14 games with a completion rate of just under 70%. He threw for 2,913 yards, 17 touchdowns, and a mere three INTs. A lot of his damage came on the ground, rushing for 11 TDs and just under 1,000 yards. Daniels is the definition of a dual-threat quarterback and can change the game in so many ways. While the SEC isn't easy, he has the opportunity to be a game-changer for LSU in 2023 and in the process, can put himself in the Heisman conversation. Vegas certainly thinks he's capable of doing so.

Quinn Ewers (+1000)

+1000 odds might be a bit too generous for Quinn Ewers. Yes, he did have a decent year as a freshman for Texas, going 6-4 and throwing for over 2,000 yards. The 15 TDs to six picks ratio isn't fantastic though. That being said, there is going to be serious pressure on him to perform with the Longhorns' stacked QB room waiting for their time to shine. Maalik Murphy and Arch Manning are Ewers' backups.

Jordan Travis (+1400)

At Florida State, Jordan Travis showed out last year. The former Louisville standout threw for over 3,200 yards and 24 touchdowns and barely got intercepted. As a fifth-year senior, this is his last chance to really make a statement at the college level and perhaps get a shot at the NFL. Plus, there are high expectations for the Seminoles this season and Travis is the focal point. An ACC title is very possible for Florida State and possibly, Travis can be a Heisman finalist.

Marvin Harrison Jr (+2000)

Wideouts don't win the Heisman too often. DeVonta Smith did in 2020 but that was rare. Ohio State star Marvin Harrison has all the potential to be the next, though. The Buckeyes standout is Ryan Day's best player and was CJ Stroud's top target a year ago, hauling in 77 receptions for 1,263 yards and 16 touchdowns. This will be Harrison Jr.'s last season in college because he's projected to be a first-round pick next April. The WR is a legitimate difference-maker when he steps on the field and will be Kyle McCord's top option. Expect a big year out of Harrison Jr. and maybe, he even wins the Heisman. He's the only wideout in the country I see capable of doing so.

Bo Nix (+2000)

Nix is another longshot but he's worth a look. The Oregon QB announced he'd return to Eugene for one more season instead of declaring for the NFL Draft, which provides the Ducks with a major boost. The Auburn transfer was ridiculously consistent in 2022. He completed 71.9% of his passes for a mind-boggling 3,594 yards, 29 touchdowns, and only seven interceptions. Nix also ran for 14 touchdowns. A true athlete. Oregon is a very good team and Nix is only going to improve.

Heisman Trophy Futures Pick

There are some great quarterbacks in the country and although I do love Caleb Williams, a player has only won the Heisman in back-to-back years once ever. Regardless, put some money down on Williams but also splash some cash on Jayden Daniels and Marvin Harrison Jr.
