As things stand, just about everyone in Oklahoma is gearing up for the November elections, as a new Governor will be voted in to replace Kevin Stitt. For plenty of people, this has been viewed as a positive, as Stitt has long worked against the tribes in trying to get sports betting legalized. However, there's a favorite in place, and Mike Mazzei becoming Oklahoma Governor would be trouble for sports betting. Is this something for local citizens to worry about moving forward?

Potentially, according to the oddsmakers, including odds posted on the prediction markets, Mazzei holds a 78 percent chance of winning the election. On one hand, it tells us that Oklahoma very well could have its next Governor in place. At the same time, though, Mazzei has previously stood in the way of sports betting, and there's some concern that history could repeat itself there. That's obviously not what sports fans are hoping for, as this could spell trouble for Oklahoma betting as a whole.

"I was going to wait until the runoff just to let the process work," Stitt said in a recent interview endorsing Mazzei. "But Mike Mazzei is the guy that I think should be the next governor. And he is a little goofy, but he's so smart; he's an accountant type. And he's served in my cabinet as my budget secretary. We want a pro-business governor in there to take the lead for the next four years."

Stitt endorsing Mazzei like this tells you everything you need to know. Officials in Oklahoma working under Stitt made it more than clear they were against legalizing sports betting, and all signs are pointing to Mazzei having a similar mindset. No one can argue with the fact that sports betting tax revenue would be through the roof, but that doesn't seem to be a priority in the state. It will be interesting to see what Mazzei says as an update for his thoughts on legal betting, but people should be worried.

As you might have been able to guess too, Oklahoma citizens are already betting on the Governor race through prediction markets, which is a total shame. This has been an ongoing issue for Oklahoma, and it's yet another reason why lawmakers have been working to get these markets more regulated. However, no efforts have been successful, with PolyMarket and Kalshi still in operation.

On Kalshi alone, the odds continue to be updated for the Governor race, which of course is going to have an impact on things in November. If people see that Mazzei is a huge favorite and that the betting trends are in his favor, they might be discouraged to vote for the opposition. Worse than that, people could decide to vote for Mazzei and also bet on him to win, so it'd be a win-win for them.

This is not ideal, and it creates a whole different sort of issue for voting. It's not just the Governor race that people are going to be voting/betting on too, which opens up so many more doors for trouble. This could all change with legal sports betting as well, but once again, it doesn't look like Oklahoma is racing to make things happen. And with Mazzei not being a huge proponent of things too, it only complicates the push for the future.

Despite plenty of negativity right now, the hope remains that Oklahoma will legalize sports betting in 2027. It's truly unknown if things will go in that direction, though, as first we must see who gets elected as the new Governor. And just because Mazzei does potentially win, that doesn't mean that things are going to be wiped off the table or anything.

What will need to happen would be for the local tribes to meet with Mazzei and see if they can get on the same page with a sports betting bill that everyone can be happy with. It's no secret that the tribes in the state and Stitt had a rocky relationship, which has plenty of people convinced that it has led to the delay in things moving forward for sports betting. Oklahoma remains one of 11 states without it, but that needs to change soon.

People all over the state are finding ways to place their sports bets, and with the NFL betting season around the corner, the loss of potential revenue is pretty damning. It's going to be on the next Governor to try to fix this problem, but that's of course going to be much easier said than done. Only time will tell if legal sports betting for Oklahomans arrives in 2027 or not, but so many people are hoping for some good news there.
