Grand National: Light Weight, Sharp Form Help Eclair Surf

They will go four miles and two furlongs over the Aintree course, making a total of 30 jumps as they complete the course.

The Grand National is a tradition that dates back to 1839, when Lottery won the Grand Liverpool Steeplechase, the race we now know as the Grand National. Some of the most beloved horses in racing history have won the Grand National, like three-time winner Red Rum (1973, 1974, 1977) and the recently retired Tiger Roll (2018, 2019).

Defending champion Minella Times returns to the fray, and other top jumpers like Delta Work, Snow Leopardess, and Any Second Now line up as well. Who will find a place in racing immortality this year, and who will hold the key to a big score on Grand National day?  Read on to find out more about horse racing betting at the Grand National!

Grand National Handicapping

Now that you have your betting account ready, it’s time to handicap the race and place your bets! Here are the horses with the best chance to make an impact in the 2022 Grand National:

Grand National Betting Favorites

The favourite in most markets is Snow Leopardess, a mare who has won her last three races. That includes two back at Aintree, so she does like the course. 10 stone 9 makes her well-handicapped, too. However, no mare has won the National since 1951, and as good as her form is, it isn’t enough to make her stand out to bet at the shortest price in a 40-horse field.

Minella Times will be well bet off of his win last year, especially since his trainer Henry de Bromhead and jockey Rachael Blackmore have been cleaning up at the major jumps festivals. But, he will carry 21 pounds more than he did when he won last year, and he has yet to finish a race since his Grand National triumph last year.

Delta Work, off a victory at Cheltenham last month, looms as the class of the field. He was assigned the second-highest impost, making him worth asking questions about at a comparably short price. But, if he can hold his form off of that last outing, he is sharp enough to merit use in exotics, in particular.

Grand National Price Horses

In a field of 40, finding live prices is the best way to make your wager count. The most interesting bet in the Grand National is Eclair Surf. His 10 stone 6 is one of the lightest imposts in the entire field, but his recent form sparkles. He lugged 19 more pounds last out: when he was only beaten by Win My Wings, who turned around and won the Scottish Grand National next out.

Longhouse Poet is another who should provide good value. Though he was well beaten last out at Navan, that was on the hurdle and he can improve returning to a chase. He won the Thyestes Handicap at Gowran two starts ago, something that was a better test of his stamina and jumping abilities. That was also the race that his trainer Martin Brassil used to prep Numbersixvalverde — who went on to win the Grand National.

Grand National Exotic Longshots

Two For Gold has been a horse who either hits the board or fails to finish, with very few efforts in between. Though he still has to prove that he enjoys Aingree, his recent races leading into the Grand National have been sharp, including a pair of wins and then a quality second-place finish in a Grade 1 at Ascot. At odds around 40/1 in most places, that is enough to make him interesting.

In the deepest exotics, make sure to sprinkle Poker Party. Yes, his recent form is next to nothing. But, so was the recent form of 100/1 shot Balko des Flos going into the National last year, and he ran second for Poker Party’s trainer: Henry de Bromhead, who does nothing but show up at the biggest jumps races. At likely triple figures, why not take a swing on that yard?
