Bay Bridge can make the grade in Prince of Wales's

The Prince of Wales's (G1) on Wednesday, June 15 is one of the most important betting races in the world! Offering a £1 million purse and a guaranteed berth in the Breeders’ Cup Turf, the race always draws some of the top horses in the world to go about ten furlongs over the Ascot grass. It is a racing and betting event unlike any other!

Lord North, who won the race in 2020, will try to become only the fourth horse in the history of the Prince of Wales’s to win the race twice. However, he will have imposing foes standing in his way. They include likely favorite Bay Bridge, a winner of his last five starts, as well as Shahryar, who hopes to continue Japan’s sparkling recent record of sending on-form horses to international race meets.

Prince of Wales's Field

This is the official field for the 2022 Prince of Wales's in wagering number order, with post positions, trainers and jockeys. Keep in mind that in most European races, including at Royal Ascot, the betting number is not necessarily the same as the post position.

  1. Bay Bridge (Sir Michael Stoute/Ryan Moore) - Post 2
  2. Lord North (John and Thady Gosden/Lanfranco Dettori) - Post 5
  3. Shahryar (Hideyaki Fujiwara/Cristian Demuro) - Post 3
  4. State of Rest (Joseph O’Brien/Shane Crosse) - Post 1
  5. Grand Glory (Gianluca Bietolini/Mickael Barzalona) - Post 4

Keep in mind that the odds on these horses will fluctuate until post time. If you bet the race at the track, you cannot guarantee that you will get an overlay on your horse, even if you see it before the race. This is why betting at an online sportsbook is better. They offer fixed-odds wagering, meaning you can lock in the best price on your pick the moment you place a bet!

Prince of Wales's Handicapping

With your new online betting account at the ready, it is time to handicap the race and find out which runners you want to bet. These horses have the best chance to make an impact in the 2022 Prince of Wales's:

Prince of Wales's Top Contenders

The likely favorite in the Prince of Wales’s is rising star Bay Bridge. It took him three tries to break his maiden, though he has not lost since. All five of his wins have come at the ten-furlong distance of the Prince of Wales’s, including his last two on good ground. Importantly, he has shown the ability to run a good race right up with the lead, his best asset as he tests his class in a paceless five-horse affair.

The other major contender is Shahriyar, most recently the winner of the Sheema Classic (G1) at Meydan. That win proves that this horse, already a G1 winner in his home country when winning the Japanese Derby last year, can be effective after a major ship. The good ground should suit him as well. The biggest question for him is the pace, but he does not have to drop too far back and should be in range.

Prince of Wales's Price Horses

The other three horses in the race will all be longer shots. However, they all three will have to deal with a pace scenario that will not suit them the best, as they do most of their better running from off the pace and will have to catch up with horses who have both more early speed and better current form.

Among the price horses Lord North appeals the most. He already won this race two years ago, meaning that he can handle the course and distance. He dead-heated in the Dubai Turf (G1) earlier this year, and though he was fourth next out in the Tattersalls Gold Cup (G1), he was beaten less than two lengths and may be in stronger form second off that ship. And, he tried a closer-to-the-pace style in that outing.

State of Rest, a globetrotter who is already a G1 winner in both the United States and Australia, makes his second start off the layoff since the Cox Plate last October. In that first start back he was a close third in the Tattersalls Gold Cup. However, his more natural running style is from off the pace and he may have to deal with some well-meant horses who get the jump on him.

Grand Glory rounds out the field. Her form lines in France show some quality foes including Audarya and Rougir. However, she may be the most pace-compromised horse in the field. Furthermore, so much of her better form comes over softer ground, something she will not get on Wednesday at Royal Ascot.
